Focusing on Big Wins means that youâre focused on doing a few important things, not a bunch of tiny, meaningless minutia. But that doesnât mean you donât focus on small things. In fact, quick wins let you start gaining momentum. I learned this lesson when I was researching [my book](). I bought virtually every personal finance book I could. I also watched people in the money section to see what they were reading and why. I noticed something very interesting. People would pick up a book and start reading it. Invariably, every single money book starts out with the first chapter saying, âYou need to figure out what youâre spending, so track all of your spending and write it down, because weâre going to keep a budget.â What do you think people do when they read that? [Gif] They close the book! They put it back on the shelf. Nobody wants to be told to track their spending and keep a budget. Why? Because it makes you feel bad about yourself. And you realize youâre in for a long slog with the book. Thereâs no quick win. So hereâs what I did. In my book, chapter 1 is all about credit cards. Why? We all have a credit card â and we all hate them. But there are some easy, quick wins you can get with a few simple actions. I gave people the exact phone numbers to use to call their credit card company, and I gave them an exact word-for-word script to use to negotiate against their credit card company. Not âYou should negotiate.â No! I gave the exact words to use. YOU: Hello, Iâd like to lower the APR on my credit card, please. CREDIT CARD REP: Umm⦠why? YOU: Iâve been a loyal customer to you for X years. Also, Iâve paid my bill in full and on time for the past few months. I know a few other credit cards offering better rates than what Iâm getting right now, and Iâd hate for this interest rate to drive me away from your service. What can you do for me? CREDIT CARD REP: Hmm. Let me check⦠Mr. Sethi, I just discovered that I can lower your rate from 15% to 12%. Will this work? Guess what happens when people read these scripts? They think âOh, yeah. I got a late fee last monthâ or âYeah, my APR is too high.â And they use the phone number right there to make the call, and then they read the script to the customer service rep. And it works! In five minutes, they negotiate their APR down or get a late fee waived. They get a quick win! They realize âOh, this stuff actually works.â Odds are, they buy the book and are a student for life. After a quick win, the next step is to start systematizing and automating those things. For example, I have a reminder in my calendar every 6 months or a year to call my credit card companies and renegotiate. The reminder says something like âCall up credit card company, negotiate any fees, and make sure that you're using all the benefits that are offered for you.â Simple! The principle is this: Start with a quick win, something thatâs small and easily achievable. Then, use that momentum to build toward big, systematic wins that will last you a long, long time. And like I said, one of the biggest wins you can have is starting your own business. [Earnable](), my program that shows you how to start your own business, is focused on helping you get quick wins and build momentum. And Earnable Live takes it to the next level. I push people to come up with business ideas, pitch a product, sell to a customer, and more â right on a live call with a group of peers watching on. [Earnable Community] And it works! [Earnable Community] We just finished the inaugural class of Earnable Live, and weâre now enrolling the next group. Enrollment closes Friday so that we can start working with the next group of students. I hope Iâll see you there! [Click here]() to find out more about Earnable and Earnable Live. [Earnable Live Workshops] âTrust in the universe, and it (or my partner) will provideâ At its best, manifesting can help us be intentional about the kind of lives we want to live. It can help us make a plan to get there. But at its worst, âmanifestingâ is a phrase that broke life coaches use to convince people to sign up for their programs on Instagram. Intuition like this can affect the people around you â especially a partner â who donât have the same intuition. And if theyâre the ones who have to step in to save the day, it can be really, really difficult. On this weekâs episode of the I Will Teach You To Be Rich podcast, we meet Charlotte and Alex. Charlotte calls herself an intuitive and believes in letting the universe take care of her. Alex has had to step in to save the day ⦠more than once. When I ask him to describe it, he recounts feelings that Charlotte didnât know about. This episode reminds me of the poster in my momâs hallway. It says, âTrust in God, but lock your car.â (And on the back, thereâs a discount price tag from TJ Maxx.) Itâs great if you believe that God or the universe will look out for you. But you still need a [Conscious Spending Plan](). [Click here]() to listen to my conversation with Charlotte and Alex. Can I help them expand their Rich Life vision ⦠and work on a plan to get there?
