Nobody in the financial industry wants to give you a reward! They want to take To view this email as a web page, [click here]() “My love language is spending money I don’t have” Javier, this week’s guest on the I Will Teach You To Be Rich podcast, is proud of his credit cards. He thinks new cards and higher limits are a reward, not a hook from the credit card companies to get you to spend more … and owe them more in interest. Nobody in the financial industry wants to give you a reward! They want to take your money and bleed you dry! Javier’s spending is driven by emotions. There’s nothing wrong with emotions, but you can’t build a Rich Life based purely on how you feel. You have to pair that with knowledge, with real analysis, to see if what you want is possible. Yes, sometimes people are too focused on spreadsheets. But sometimes, you DO need to look at the numbers. To become confident with your money, you have to become competent. It’s a huge tip-off that someone isn’t effective with money when they’re in debt and they are talking about credit card points. These programs are designed to hook you. You should never spend on something simply to get the points — it doesn’t make any financial sense. If you cannot afford to pay it off that month, then don’t buy it. It’s really as simple as that. Javier’s spending is leaving him at risk of losing his relationship with Jessica. Jessica makes $80,000 per year, while Javier makes $33,000. Jessica has $15k in savings and $175k invested. Javier has $0. He’s also $21,000 in debt — including $9,000 from one recent trip to Colombia. A lot of Javier’s spending comes down to “Why not?” Now, more of us should adopt the life philosophy of “Why not?” Why not try that new dish? Why not take a risk and go out on that date? Why not spend on something that’s really meaningful? We can create a rich tapestry of life by saying yes to more opportunities. But what happens if you say yes too much, or if you say yes to the wrong things? You can end up in debt. There’s an even more subtle problem. Once you’re in debt, it’s very difficult to mentally turn the page and realize that you have to change the way you behave. I’ve seen this happen with a lot of people. They make decision after decision, end up with bad consequences, but can’t make the connection between their attitudes and where they’ve ended up. Javier uses a metaphor that gives me hope that he’s starting to make the connection: “I feel like when there’s a soccer team and all the players are good, but you have the guy that sucks on defense and you can get scored on. I feel like that guy right now,” he said. Can Javier make the change? Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
