He loves his job but if you ask how heâs doing, his #1 response will be complaining about how busy he is. So I found it interesting when I visited him and noticed grocery bags sitting on his counter. âWhatâs that?â âI just got back from the grocery store.â I paused. âHave you ever thought about having someone do your grocery shopping?â He looked at me like I was a nut. PAY to have someone do his grocery shopping? What kind of elitist would do that? Hereâs a $750,000 entrepreneur behaving like he still earns $60,000. Why? In other areas of life, we change as we grow: our clothing style, where we live, where we eat. Yet in the area of how we use money and time â especially for entrepreneurs â why are we so resistant to change? Iâd like to take you behind the scenes of one of the most powerful productivity concepts Iâve learned as a business owner: buying back your time in both your working and personal life. (Buying back your time is part of my productivity system, which I wrote about [here]().) [The 3 Tiers of Productivity] Think about it: When you [start a business](), like my friend, you have more time than money. But as your business grows, that reverses â and youâll soon have more money than time. The same is true as you progress in your career and land your [Dream Job](). Hereâs something that Iâve noticed. People who grew up without a lot of money are unequipped to recognize how the decision-making calculus changes as your income increases. To paraphrase author Brian Tracy, âAs I got more successful, I couldnât afford to do some of the things I used to ⦠like mow my lawn.â Itâs an uncomfortable truth that many people claim they value time over money, but if you look at their calendars, youâll find the opposite. For example, I remember being 15 years old and reading tons of PC magazines as I learned how to build my own computer, figured out which Pentium processor to get, and compared the video cards that would let me play Duke Nukem best. Now? I just buy a Mac. I could share a million other examples from my own life: Me scoffing at flying business class or shopping at Nordstrom vs. T.J.Maxx (shoutout to T.J. for outfitting me for years). Note: I sometimes still find it difficult to know when itâs ârightâ to spend money or time on something. On the IWT blog, we identified â[7 ways to buy back your time]().â What ways do you buy back your time? []âI spent $110k+ on a vacationâ How do you buy back time on vacation? Sometimes, it involves spending more so that you have some conveniences included that save you time. A while ago, I asked you to let me know the most youâve spent on a vacation and whether it was worth it. Interesting fact: Not one response said it wasnât worth it. Not one. No matter how much people spent, it was always worth it. Something to keep in mind⦠Here are four examples that show how to live a Rich Life at different levels of spending. [Rich Life Spending] [Rich Life Spending] [Rich Life Spending] [Rich Life Spending] Your Rich Life is yours. You can live a Rich Life now no matter how much you make or how much you spend. []How I travel for 6 weeks per year Hereâs part of my Rich Life. A few years ago, I decided to take a 6-week vacation. Every year. No computer. No email. No business (well, I spend 1 hour per week on my business while traveling â the rest runs in the background). My wife and I stay at the worldâs best hotels, while eating street food and going deep on culture and design. Hereâs how this happened. For our honeymoon, my wife and I were planning to take an 8-day safari. We were eating out with friends who asked us what we were thinking of doing. âWeâre going to go on safari. Maybe 8 days in Kenya,â we told them. âThat sounds amazing,â one of them said. âWhen we got married, we took 6 months off! We still remember it.â Hold on a second â 6 MONTHS? The next couple told us they took a year off and traveled around the world. My wife and I walked out of that dinner with 2 questions: - Who the hell were these people? We thought they were normal people ⦠but who takes MONTHS off?
- What if...? What if we expanded our dream of how long we could take off? Where did we come up with 8 days, anyway? So we decided to take a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy, Kenya, India, and Thailand. We brought our parents with us to Italy â we told them, âJust show up at the airport and weâll handle the rest." [Ramit and Cass] At the end of our honeymoon, we decided not to make this a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We decided to do it every year. The next year, we went to India and Japan. [Ramit and Cass] For this 6-week trip, I didnât bring a laptop (just my iPad). We stayed at places like the Oberoi in Ranthambore and Aman Tokyo. We designed our own scarves using traditional Indian block printing. We also met a local couple in Japan who invited us into their apartment to teach us about Japanese interior design. And throughout my travels... ...working one hour per week... ...my business grew. [Ramit] Best of all, we created memories weâll never forget. What if you could travel for 6 weeks? What if you could take your family along? What if your first concern wasnât price â but the memories youâd create? One of my favorite parts of working for myself is that I'm in control of my life. I'm not limited to 2 weeks PTO. Or forced to start work at exactly 8am, every day, day after day. There's no boss who will be angry with me if I take a long lunch with a friend or who will say no if I want to add an extra week on a vacation. I'm in control.
