Alex is scared to broach the subject of spending money with her husband. [IWT Header] âIâm quitting my job, but Iâm worried my husband doesn't support meâ Alexandra and Brandon have a household income of $135,000. Alex just handed in her one weekâs notice, but she still has financial needs, and sheâs scared to broach the subject of spending money on herself with her husband. [Podcast image]() In this weekâs episode of the I Will Teach You To Be Rich podcast, it becomes apparent that self-agency has been absent from other aspects of their lives. From their relationship to career choices, both have been playing by everyone elseâs rulebook but their own. These conversations have been on the back burner for long enough â itâs time to get candid. Here are some things to listen for: - Alex states that she feels like she needs to ask permission to spend money on herself because she doesnât make money. Have you ever had an income difference like this in your relationship, or maybe your parents did? If so, how did that affect the relationship? (4:13)
- At around 6â7 minutes into the conversation, Brandon speaks a lot. But what did he actually say? Alex wanted to know if she could spend money on her health supplements. His response in plain English was, âWell, sure, but maybe not. But I guess it's not my place to say really? And I'll leave it up to you.â What is that answer? This is a textbook example of being noncommittal and indecisive. (7:28)
- Alex says, âI know there are things underneath the surface for both of us that we're not saying to each other because we care about each other and probably don't want to bring up...so we do the dance on eggshells...but then we don't get anywhere with it, we maybe just harbor a bit of resentment towards each other. And that's not good either.â Yes! Alex hits on a point that I LOVE about the podcast â getting people to address the thoughts that rarely come to the surface. (9:46)
- Brandon says, âWhen I look at our finances, I consider them to be a team effort. And it goes into the pool, and that's our money." Do you think it works better to pool finances with your spouse or keep them separate? Why? (14:01) [Click here]() to listen to the latest episode of the I Will Teach You To Be Rich podcast. Most people donate to charity at the end of the year. Or they volunteer at their kids' school every now and then. Maybe they offer to drive their friend to the airport. But if generosity was your #1 Money Dial, what would that look like? - You could become known for giving great tips. 25% tips? Thatâs your minimum. 100% tips? Sure, why not.
- Youâd surprise your nieces and nephews with gifts just because.
- Every year on your birthday, youâd throw a huge event and raise $10,000 for your favorite charity. When this is your #1 Money Dial, you can be truly generous. Here are other generosity examples from readers: âWhen Beyoncé was on tour a couple years ago I bought tickets for my wife and whichever 4 friends she wanted to bring with her (five people in one car). The tickets were around $200 each, so around a grand total. The look in her eyes after I gave her the tickets was something Iâll remember forever and she still talks about that concert.â âOn an annual basis, I donate $15,000 to various charities. I consider this as luxury living and some may call me crazy because I could have had fancy dinners, BMW, jewelry, etc. Giving back is my priority.â âOne of my best friends was in some credit card debt and was killing herself to pay it off ⦠but worked for a nonprofit (read: didn't get paid much). It was going to take her years! Two of us went in and paid it off for her, just like that. Writing a $5,000 check that frees a friend from chains without having to think twice? Priceless.â Tomorrow, Iâm going to share one of my own generosity Money Dial experiences. But I also want to share yours. Reply and tell me one generous thing youâve done this year â or plan to do before the end of the year. --------------------------------------------------------------- How I manage my finances (ADVANCED) If you're doing well and you've already mastered the basics of personal finance, I want to show you what comes next.
