Recently I worked with a student named Steve who was having trouble wrapping his head around just how much investing would be worth to him. Steve is 32 years old, lives in New Jersey, and makes roughly $80,000 per year. I asked Steve: “How much do you think you could start investing with today?” His answer: $1,000. Then I asked him, “How much can you put in every year?” (Or each month?) He said $1,000 per month — and maybe more if he gets any unexpected extra income, like a bonus. Let's make a couple of safe, basic assumptions. Let's assume: - Steve will retire at 65. That means Steve will invest for the next 33 years (65 - 32 years old). - Steve earns a 7% interest rate. This is how much his investments will earn each year, on average. 7% is a conservative estimate based on low-risk, index-fund investing. Q: How much money do you think Steve will have at retirement? (Actually make a guess!) Steve’s guess? He thought he’d have about $400,000. Ready for the real answer? [Steve's projected retirement fund] $1,536,430.52! Whoa! Over a million and a half. That’s more than 3x what Steve thought. Even though at age 32 he hasn’t even started investing yet, Steve will be a millionaire by the time he retires. Many of you reading this right now will also be millionaires. You just need TIME. Investing is full of truths that are counterintuitive, even hard to believe, but still very true. Some of my favorites: - Many of life's biggest problems — retirement, inflation, passive income, and more — can all be solved with early, consistent, long-term investing. - Paying even 1% in fees on your investments can lower your total returns over 35 years by 28%. - Almost everyone would make more money from low-cost index funds over the long term than investing in anything else. (For how to do this, step by step, [click here]().) - Personal finance is one of the rare areas of life where someone earning $35,000 and someone earning $1 million essentially have access to the same winning strategies. - If your investing portfolio grows enough, it will pay you more than your salary ever could — including all your housing expenses, forever. This is true financial freedom. More in my brand new program: [Invest Your Money](). --------------------------------------------------------------- A Rich Life wedding Here’s a Rich Life story from my student Neville Mehra: "My favorite Rich Life moment of the past few years was my wedding in August 2018. My wife and I loved being able to bring together our friends and family from all over the world to celebrate our special day. I grew up in the United States, but my parents are from Ireland and India, and my wife is from Russia. So our families are spread out all over the world. On top of all that, I've been a digital nomad for the past seven years, so my friends are scattered all over the world too! Even though we kept our wedding fairly small (especially by Indian standards) with about 50 guests, we ended up inviting guests from six continents! Since we are nomadic ourselves and our guests are so spread out, there was no one obvious place for us to have our wedding. We considered places as diverse as Moscow, Miami, and Santorini. Ultimately we chose Sintra, Portugal, because it had significance to us as one of the first places we visited together, and because Portugal was easily accessible for as many of our guests as possible. And best of all, our venue, Pena Palace, looked like a fairy-tale castle! Choosing the city turned out to be the easy part. Planning the actual wedding from far away was a whole other story, but in the end, it all worked out beautifully, and we live happily ever after." [Rich Life wedding] Yes! I LOVE this story. Keep sending in your Rich Life stories and photos. I love to share them with the community. --------------------------------------------------------------- Last chance to get investing coaching with me This is a quick reminder that Invest Your Money — [my brand new investing program]() — closes TONIGHT at 11:59pm Pacific.
