When people dream of making more money they think of the obvious things. The stuff you can buy, the freedom you'll get, etc. But there are some very subtle mindset changes that happen as you make more money. And itâs stuff that people often donât talk about. Today, I want to give you a peek at some of the things millionaires know that other people don't: 1. If you have a problem that money can solve, you donât have a problem. Use your money â thatâs what itâs there for. Buy your time back. Hire an expert to teach you how to do something. Or better yet, to do it for you. 2. Thereâs lots of advice about how to save money â but very little about how to spend it. The great irony is that most of the advice is on saving money â and isnât very good at all. You get random internet writers telling you to cut back on lattes so that in 300 million years, you can have $250,000 in your retirement account. You know whatâs even rarer? Advice about how to spend. When does it make sense to buy premium? What about luxury? What do other people with your income spend their money on? Where do you learn this? For most people, the answer is nowhere, so at six figures of savings, theyâre still spending the way they spent as a 22-year-old. 3. Pick an area of your life that you truly love and use money to have world-class experiences in it. My area is convenience, and I used money to hire a personal chef, an executive assistant, a personal trainer ⦠and more. When youâre intentional about the 1â2 areas of life that you truly love, you can go deep. I call this concept âMoney Dialsâ in my program How to Win the Game of Advanced Personal Finance. [Calling first student of new product] Another area of my life I love to go all out on â my business. This pic is of me calling the first student of a product we recently launched. 4. Surprise: The more successful you become, the less you can afford to do the things you used to. Brian Tracy says, âAs I became more successful, I couldnât afford to do things I used to,â like mowing the lawn. As your earnings increase, your calculus of time vs. money will change. It should. Look to people 1â2 levels above you and study how they live their lives. Chances are, when you reach the same level, youâll make similar choices. 5. If you find yourself still agonizing over $20 charges while earning six figures, youâve made a mistake. Making money isnât that hard. But rewriting your inner story â which youâve calcified and reinforced since childhood â is very difficult. And it often starts with learning about advanced psychology and techniques on money. 6. I used to scoff at people flying first class. Now I get it. The biggest lesson I would give to 23-year-old Ramit is to ask why someone who has more money would spend it on a certain suit, or first-class travel, or multi-generational travel. Sometimes the answers are not obvious. Nobody teaches this. Until now. 7. In the old days, ârichâ meant some stodgy old guy living in a mansion with lace curtains wearing an ascot. Something like this: [In the old days of being rich] I have a different belief: You define your Rich Life. For me, I live in California. I like going out, I have a personal chef and trainer, and I love traveling with my family. For you, being rich can give you access (behind-the-scenes tours), privacy (walls around your house, after-hours shopping), connection (to other people like you), knowledge (trainers and tutors), and fun (experiences others canât have). Todayâs Rich look and feel different. Take a look in the mirror, {NAME}. You can be todayâs Rich, and you can decide how to design your life. 8. Your kidsâ experience will be very different than yours. I grew up in a middle-class family with my dad working and my mom staying home with us. We ate out maybe once a month â and usually when we had a coupon. My future kids will have a very different experience. This is something I talk about with my friends all the time. 9. Some things donât change. Money doesnât mean everything in your life is gold-plated. I donât give a shit about eating organic meat or the type of socks I wear. One of my favorite things to spend money on is tacos. [Ramit enjoying tacos] 10. Itâs OK to buy something because you want it. I have a pair of cashmere sweatpants that I love. The price is absolutely outrageous â and every time I put them on, I love them even more. Not everything has an ROI. 11. The more you accumulate, the fewer people you can talk to about it. The internet is built for people who want to cut back on the amount of grapes they buy to save $0.72/year. It drives me crazy. So where can you turn for help when you have Advanced Personal Finance questions? This is why I created How to Win the Game of Advanced Personal Finance. 12. The hedonic treadmill is real. But the advice about it is wrong. The hedonic treadmill â or getting used to increasing amount of spending â is real. But the answer isnât to deny its influence. The answer is to acknowledge it. Be thoughtful: If you get a $10,000 raise, save some of it â but take $2,000 of it and spend it on something INCREDIBLE that youâll always remember. Iâd love to show you what I learned along the way, including my systems, who I work with, and how I changed my psychology about money.
