To figure out where your ceiling is right now, let’s start with a simple question: What would you do with an extra $1,000/month? I like $1,000 as a starting number because it’s something most people can imagine. Even if an extra grand feels like a ton of money, you probably know exactly how you’d spend it. You could: - Pay down student or mortgage debt faster (if you paid an extra $1,000/month toward your principal on a 30-year fixed $200,000 mortgage, you’d pay it off 19 years early and save $98,732 in interest) - Do some home repairs or small improvements - Contribute to a college fund for your kids - Switch to buying all-organic groceries or fancy raw pet food, or both - Stash for an epic vacation - Add an extra day of childcare every week - Save or invest more every month - Or something else only you can think of — because it’s your money and your life!
