When I met Sophina, she had just bought a condo 8 months before. But when she made the purchase, she didn’t know about the homeowners association fees. Sophina’s not alone. On top of mortgage payments, homeowners have to budget for closing costs, utilities, taxes, insurance, maintenance — and HOA fees. Renting can be part of your Rich Life! How to fix a major problem...with writing HOAs charge monthly fees to cover the cost of maintenance and amenities. And most people don’t realize these fees RISE over time. So Sophina had to pay $500+ per month in fees…on top of mortgage payments. But there was an even bigger problem: Sophina didn’t have hot water in her condo. Which meant Sophina was taking cold showers every day. The plumber she hired under her insurance said it was going to cost thousands of dollars to fix it. And she was hoping that it was something the HOA would fix. Sophina tried to call…and was told to wait a few weeks. WEEKS? How many weeks? Two? More? Guys, that’s not OK! What if the HOA wasn’t going to fix this hot water problem? Was Sophina supposed to keep having cold showers? She already had over $7,000 in credit card debt from moving in and purchasing extra things for a new place that most people don’t think about, like a new mattress, furniture, and kitchen and bathroom items. That was just SIX sentences, and it took minutes to write — can you see how powerful this is? Even if they don’t respond in the way you want, you’ll know exactly the extent of the problem you’re dealing with. 3 “must-have” elements in every powerful email If you’re like Sophina and need an issue fixed ASAP, do something about it! If you don’t communicate, you can’t expect anything to change. When you need to get your point across in your writing, include these 3 elements: - BE SPECIFIC: Give them the details. Tell them how long this has been a problem, exactly how many times you’ve contacted them, etc. - BE DIRECT: Be clear about what you are asking for, and make sure you give them a deadline to respond. - BE ASSERTIVE: When you’re dealing with things like this, you need to make sure people take you seriously. That doesn’t mean you have to be a jerk about it, but be very clear about the consequences. Apply it to your writing, and reply to this email letting me know how it goes.
