Before IWT, he worked at a company that always made it on Fortune’s best places to work…free lunches, generous paid time off, tuition reimbursement, and much more. He was on a team of five people, and his manager was hiring. When the manager sent off a job description to the team, my coworker said he read a few bullet points on the job description and then replied all saying, “None of us on the team would qualify for this role!” The manager replied, “Ha, I guess you’re right!” (They all had great working relationships. This is something I care a lot about at IWT.) [IWT Team] Most of the IWT team in LA for the Netflix launch party in April. Having a team you gel with can make all the difference. But guess what? His manager did not change the job description at all. That was the one published on the company’s job site and floating around on job boards. In other words, they were looking for a unicorn! They eventually did find a great candidate for the role. He was a fresh college grad (i.e., he also didn’t have all the requirements on the job description). Don’t self-sabotage your job search The truth is most people sabotage their job search. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve worked with people who read a job description…discover they don’t meet 2-3 requirements…and then hang their heads walking away in defeat. [Ramit at Stanford] At my college graduation. This guy was beating out more qualified and experienced candidates! You can’t be a doctor if you’ve been working as a car mechanic for the past 10 years. You have to go to medical school, do your residency, and pass state licensing requirements — at a minimum. If you don’t have those things…you’re unqualified. There’s no way you can get the job, no matter what. But being under-qualified means you have a chance, even if you don’t have 2-3 qualifications. [So youre telling me theres a chance meme] The best candidates know that if they’re in the ballpark of a job description, they can learn the rest… And they will prove it in the interview. When producers reached out to me about doing [a Netflix show](113/d586LZ04/VWVV9c6t1-VKW5J1mq9919ZdSW7-75Mp5ccgCHN99fz983qn9gW7lCdLW6lZ3pvW1vspQR6BPcQpW2ZQj4G8FttTcMFNq7q80CxBN5RK3fNPKXytW5hsZwl4RyQTTW8wvTjh8J_CXqW44NhVm6KNZVsW7rN_R75bn-kDW2PNKQQ8dFs6hW2trdL-7nKfvKN3ZdyZR1GKbkW768_L26HTx_KW91f2gq6DCpzvW1Mj-lj64zmhdW3bhRfP92bz6cW5sfWwC2FV7N-W5NsN974mc-PhW4yJZrt1yV1pKW29ML7f5h5kVFN6WbxZ-RhmYkW6MPg3-4NK6L5W2DQGDM3jGb99W1w3-jJ6q6JmXW7rtjn241Sxqdf4dF0Sl04), they asked if I had representation. I had no idea what that was! In other words, I didn’t know the slightest thing about making a TV show. But I had coached hundreds of people over the years on money issues through my business and podcast, spoken in front of packed houses, and been on camera on major media outlets like The Today Show. So I had all the qualifications except knowing about the entertainment industry on that level. But I eventually learned about that! So don’t let qualifications hold you back. So you don’t have to take it from me. You can get it right from the source when you join Find Your Dream Job. [Rusty_Pixton] “My company has some insane benefits and very generous compensation…an unlimited vacation policy on top of the ability to work remotely from anywhere in the world. For example, a good friend of mine from college asked me when I was going to come down and visit him down in the Florida panhandle. The next week I had booked tickets for a 10-day trip to enjoy some golf and time spent on the beach all without skipping a beat at work. That flexibility has allowed me to take golf trips like that to Scottsdale and Palm Springs over the last few years — and even knock out one of my ‘bucket list’ trips to the Greek Islands last year.” — Rusty Pixton You also get word-for-word scripts to use, discussions with people who have received multiple offers and created a bidding war between companies, and resume and cover letter teardowns. Stop following conventional job search advice. Stop piecing together career advice from random books, articles, Instagram, or Reddit posts. Just stop the madness already! If it was working by now, you wouldn’t be reading this. Instead, you can follow a system that’s proven over 10+ years, thousands of students, and dozens and dozens of industries…all over the world.
