What's Wrong With House Hunters? Hi Avid investor, I don't have much time to watch television at home (Investor Junkie keeps me on my toes!), but I do have three kids -- and that means plenty of trips to the doctor's office at this time of year... and the inevitable waiting room TV. Have you noticed that doctor's office televisions tend to be tuned to HGTV? Last week, I was waiting for my eldest to have her tonsils checked out and was treated to a half-hour of House Hunters. I'm sure you've seen that show or its approximately 1 billion spinoffs and copycats by now. A couple with often only the vaguest descriptions of jobs (she's a part-time nursery school coloring book dispenser; he's a professional butterfly collector) inexplicably have a huge budget for buying a house. Their realtor drives them around to three properties, and they have to choose one. None of the houses are ever totally right -- not in a great location, priced too high, bathroom the wrong color, etc. Therein lies the drama and entertainment value of the show. I checked out the official House Hunters website. Here's what HGTV says about the show: House Hunters takes viewers behind the scenes as individuals, couples and families learn what to look for and decide whether or not a home is meant for them. Focusing on the emotional experience of finding and purchasing a new home, each episode shows the process as buyers search for a home. That makes this show sound downright educational. But is it? Is HGTV painting an accurate picture of purchasing real estate? That's what Investor Junkie writer and seasoned real estate investor Ruth Lyons set out to answer last week in her awesome article [7 Important Things That HGTV Real Estate Shows Don't Tell You](. If real estate isn't your investing bag, we also checked out popular app Personal Capital and how it compares to traditional financial advisors.
