[Join the club]( The New King of Precious Metal ETFs With talk of inflation everywhere, you would think gold ETFs would dominate the landscape. And yet, financial pros searched out iShares Silver Trust ETF (SLV) more than any other precious metal ETF in the past month. Key Facts About SLV - Net assets: $10.13 billion - 12-month trailing yield: N/A - Inception: April 21, 2006 - Expense ratio: 0.50% - Number of holdings: N/A The iShares SLV ETF isn’t like most other ETFs. As a Trust, it holds physical silver bullion in a warehouse in London, a bit more than 14 tonnes to be exact. This allows the ETF to track the spot price of silver bullion, based on the London Silver Fix benchmark at a relatively low cost. However, investors cannot redeem their shares for silver. [Net assets] [Source: iShares]( While silver is considered a precious metal, it’s far less rare than gold. Plus, it has more industrial applications. Therefore, it often trades as both an inflationary hedge and based on economic activity. Performance Silver hasn’t done well in 2023, largely because of rate hikes from the Fed. As the Fed raises rates to increase the value of the dollar, it takes less dollars to buy silver. Thus, the price goes down. However, it’s up over a one-year period and nicely over the last five. [Returns] [Source: iShares]( While the SLV tracks relatively close to the price of silver, it does deviate over time, in part from its expenses. You can see that the ETF underperformed the benchmark by 6% over the last decade. However, the gap is much smaller in a shorter time frame. Competition To get a sense of how well silver and the SLV perform relative to its peers, we compared it with other silver and precious metal ETFs. - SPDR Gold Trust (GLD): One of the most popular precious metal ETFs, GLD tracks the benchmark spot price of gold bullion. - Aberdeen Standard Physical Silver Shares (SIVR): SIVR is Aberdeen’s version of the SLV and comes with a slightly lower expense ratio. - iShares Gold Trust (IAU): Similar to the GLD, the IAU tracks the spot price of gold, albeit at a lower expense ratio. - Aberdeen Standard Physical Palladium Shares ETF (PALL): PALL is the only ETF on our list that tracks Palladium, a less popular precious metal. All these ETFs hold the physical metal in a warehouse. Some are more liquid than others, with weekly options. However, the less liquid ones on our list tend to come with lower expense ratios.[Net assets] [Become a better investor in just 5 minutes a day]( Invest just 5 minutes a day to deeply understand the mechanisms of business, the economy, consumer debt, inflation, and a lot more! If you want to own silver, then we prefer SIVR.
