Popularity declines [Click to view in browser](. Dear subscriber, We all thought it was over. That’s when Gamestop (GME) surged 115% from May to June. Now, shares have dropped back from whence they came. AMC Theaters (AMC) went parabolic, shooting almost 500% in a matter of weeks. Since then, the stock has taken a 50% haircut. Meme stocks require popularity to survive. Because let's face it, most of them aren’t supported by fundamentals (at least not at these prices). SPACs were another frenzy altogether. In 2020, 248 companies went public using this mechanism, more than all of the last decade combined. But that all ground to a halt as SPAC merger filings dropped 90% in April. And while it might seem like a good time to go public and get the most money possible, regulators aren’t too keen on letting the mania continue. Much of the interest came from the retail side of the business. Eventually, institutions began jumping on board. However, they were a bit more targeted in riding the momentum. Cathy Wood’s ETFs are a perfect example, buying into high flying names but not diving so deep into the pool as to drown. Her investments span stocks like Square (SQ) to Teledoc (TDOC). However, they don’t touch these one off meme plays. Similarly, we saw several digital currency ETFs hit the market in the last two quarters. But you don’t see SPAC ETFs popping up.
