Turkey tops the tape

Not the bird [Click to view in browser](. Dear subscriber, We rarely hear much about Turkey these days, other than the occasional currency crisis. Yet, our TrackstarIQ data picked up surging interest in the country’s ETF in the last several days. It was rather unusual considering how poorly the country’s stock market has performed in recent years. The TUR ETF is less than half what it was in late 2017. And year-to-date, it’s the second to last in Europe. But there could be some hope for the beaten-down economy. With the Lira so cheap compared to the dollar, any strength would increase the value of Turkish equities on a relative basis. At the same time, foreign investors reached record lows in Turkish equities. That could set the market up for an oversold bounce in the coming months. Yet the headwinds facing the country are significant. For starters, double-digit inflation has become the norm. President Erdogan has become increasingly hostile to capital markets and central bank independence. Heck, he fired central bank governor Naci Agbal as recently as March. Relations between the U.S. and Turkey aren’t exactly at a high point. But, President Biden does have a decent history with Erdogan. Our hot take As far as international ETFs go, this is a very high risk, short-term play.
