Droughts cause doubts

The breadbasket of America is more likely to catch on fire this summer as the Sierra Nevada region hits one of its driest years on record. Statewide snowpack hit 0% on May 27th followed by an early heatwave. Farmers across the state expect to receive little water from government agencies. California supplies more than 1/3rd of all vegetables and 2/3rds of the fruits and nuts in the U.S. Some farmers are leaving as much as a third of their properties unseeded. All this means the U.S. and Canada should expect higher food prices in the coming months. What’s worse, the drought means less work to go around, even for folks that spent decades in the industry. At the same time, the lack of water is likely to lead to more fires in an already devastated region. Santa Clara county is already facing water restrictions as lake levels in Northern California dwindle. Water scarcity is real We already know the challenges facing developing countries and access to clean drinking water and proper sewage. Yet, the scarcity of water in developed countries is becoming a reality. As cities in desert climates such as Dubai and Phoenix continue to grow, the need for fresh water does as well. Investments in water production technology remain well-below what’s necessary to create a sustainable future. Few startups venture into this world, with hopes resting more on clean power that drives down the cost of desalination plants, giving us access to the vast oceans of the Earth. Eventually, more money will be needed to develop the needed water technologies to support society.
