States bet big on casinos [Click to view in browser](. Dear subscriber, Florida recently passed legislation expanding casinos and gambling in the state. Alabama sits on the precipice of six new casinos, and sports betting. DraftKings (DKNG) isn’t thrilled. But state governments salivate at the potential revenues. Gambling is big business. Globally, the market is expected to hit a compound annual growth rate of 7%, hitting $674.7 billion in 2025. As economies reopen, Vegas to Macau looks to lure investors and patrons back into the mix. Touchy subject Many states allow casinos to operate in gray areas. For example, Florida casinos operate on Indian Reservations which act as sovereign territory. Other states use rivers and tributaries to circumvent state regulations. Yet, the majority promote state lotteries, which in turn fund education in those same states. Online gambling gets even trickier. Some states like New Jersey, Delaware, and West Virginia allow for online gambling. Others limit the activities both on and offline. DraftKings gets angry It’s still amazing to think that DraftKings managed to convince legislators it was a skill sport and poker wasn’t. Yet here we are with the company opposing many expansions. Why, you ask? Because sports betting directly impacts their business. Go figure… To be fair, they support many broad-based initiatives that would allow them to expand their business. Our hot take There seems to be a general trend towards legalizing sports betting and gambling across the country. Chances are we’ll see this become more common over the years.
