Their response, “about 10 years.” That’s been the same response for nearly a century. All that is about to change… What is fusion energy? Look at the sun...NOT DIRECTLY! The light output comes from fusion - hydrogen atoms smashed together under immense pressure, resulting in a massive release of energy. Nuclear reactors use fission, the splitting of the atom. In both cases, the mass of the result is slightly less than before. That small difference was converted into energy. And the famous equation that handles that… Tiny amounts of mass convert to a whole lot of energy. Now, nuclear fission leaves radioactive waste as a byproduct. Fusion, on the other hand, only produces water! So what’s the holdup? Splitting atoms and getting those halves to smash into others to split those isn’t difficult. We’ve been able to accomplish that for nearly 100 years. Smashing two atoms together doesn’t exactly create a chain reaction. And therein lies the issue. Current solutions to drive two atoms together takes more power than we get out. Most involve extreme pressures and temperatures to make it happen. Globally, we spend around $1.5 billion annually on fusion research, not nearly enough to get it moving. Yet, the burgeoning startup scene wrapped its arms around the challenge. Researchers at TAE Technologies hit a milestone, generating stable plasma (what you see in the sun) at a balmy 50 degrees Celcius in a compact reactor. This success allowed them to raise an additional $280m for a total of $880m in funding. But, like everyone else, the proof is in the pudding.
