Shares of the U.S. Treasury ETF TLT rallied 2.33% marking a short-term bottom [Click to view in browser](. Dear subscriber, What makes one price more valuable than another? Fundamental analysts will argue that everything comes down to value. But, what is the exact value difference is between a 10-Year yield of 1.754% and 1.755%? Why did the 10-Year yield stop at one number instead of another? Like it or not, technical analysis explains why this might occur. And understanding some basics can help you improve your investment performance in the long-run. Today’s example lays out the technical case why U.S. Treasuries stopped their epic decline. Take a look at the monthly chart of the TLT ETF. Look at the bottom of the large, green candlestick in the orange box. That was the month when treasury prices broke higher and closed above their highs from 2016, no small feat. The low on that candlestick - $133.26. The low made the other day in the TLT - $133.19. Technical analysts use techniques like these to find areas of support and resistance - places where price will struggle to drop below or break above. What’s important to note is these levels aren’t absolute. There is no guarantee that treasuries stop their decline at that spot. Only that the probabilities of such an event rise at that point. The more factors that combine to create these conditions, the higher the probabilities. Notice the thick blue line also lands in that area. That’s the 50-week simple moving average. This line takes the average closing price of the last 50 weeks for the TLT. Traders often use moving averages like the 20, 50, 100, and 200-period moving averages for support, resistance, as well as identifying trends. Why should you care at all about technical analysis? Because it applies to ANY market out there. Like investing in cryptocurrencies? How would you even begin to determine a fundamental value? Technical analysis isn’t some foolproof method that rakes in millions. What it can do is augment your current investments and help you make better, more informed decisions. That said, take a look at some of these stocks and ideas below and see if you can’t apply some basic technical analysis techniques yourself.
