Volatility Cuts Both Ways as Bond Yields Soar Ahead of Inflation Data

[Click to view in browser](. Nov 9th 2020 Dear InvestingChannel Reader, The S&P 500 rallied to new highs Monday after a COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer (PFE) showed promising results. It's not just a U.S. rally. Shares across Europe surged, with Germany's DAX gaining 5.7% and France's CAC 40 up an impressive 7.4%. Meanwhile, by most measures, [China]( and other [emerging markets]( are moving to two-year highs. Sectors with the most to gain from a vaccine—travel, theaters, airlines—lead the rally on Wall Street. Crude oil gained 10%. Yet, volatility cuts both ways. Gold shed nearly $100 while silver lost $2. Bitcoin is off 2%. And Treasury bonds are reeling! The benchmark ten-year Treasury note down almost a full point, sending yields spiking to six-month highs. With government debt at $27 trillion (and counting), traders are keeping an eye on Treasury bond prices and today's jump in yields ahead of inflation data—CPI Thursday and PPI Friday—later this week.
