Up Next: Mitch McConnell’s ‘Skinny’ Package

Nov 6th 2020 Dear InvestingChannel Reader, The conclusion of the elections could pave the way for another round of fiscal stimulus talks, but the size and scope of any relief package is uncertain. According to the Washington Post, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking the lead on relief talks and will propose another “skinny” package that is much smaller than the $2 trillion plan that Democrats have been adamant about. A better-than-expected jobs report released this morning, which showed the economy adding 638K payrolls and the rate of unemployed unexpectedly falling to 6.9%, could diminish the rationale for a large package. However, any agreement on fiscal stimulus seems unlikely until the dust settles on the 2020 elections. Recounting along with legal challenges could take weeks. In addition, two possible runoff elections on January 5th in Georgia might determine the fate of the Senate, but only after Congress reconvenes early next year. Therefore, Mitch McConnell’s “skinny” package probably won’t trigger much excitement between now and then, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see fiscal stimulus “hopes” resurface as the pieces of the political puzzle fall into place between now and yearend.
