It was a big win, and consequently significant for all of Aston Villa, Tottenham Hotspur and maybe Manchester United. The changes to the three European competitions next season actually mean 11 clubs from one country could qualify for continental football in any given campaign, and it’s hard not to think that could be the Premier League in the near future due to the financial power. It is a situation that has prompted more qualified support for an alternative European Super League, but Uefa are privately completely dismissive of the prospect. They don’t see any legal way A22 can get the project off the ground, and view the body as more of a “lobby group” at the moment. There are elements of the new structures that can be criticised, though, and similar can be said for the Premier League…   NEW: Independent sports betting newsletter Our new Independent Betting newsletter offers all the latest tips, odds and offers to help you place sports bets armed with as much information as possible. The entire episode is almost illustrative of skewed perspective in football. For one, if the Premier League don’t agree to a deal, they will have one imposed upon them by the eventual independent regulator. There had recently been an expectation the regulator may not come until the end of the year or maybe later due to the delays, but the government is now determined to push the legislation through this month. That is all despite heavy lobbying from the Premier League. There is an extreme irony there, too. Given there is such a high rate of change between the top divisions, with 18 of the 24 current Championship clubs having been in the Premier League at one point, there is a high possibility many of the clubs at the top end will be voting against their own interests in a few years. The Premier League is meanwhile coming under pressure from fan groups over plans from clubs to end concessions for seniors. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Trust have been especially vocal after the recent ticket announcements… despite being the eighth wealthiest in world football. All of this is linked. Clubs raise ticket prices to try and keep up with the wage race, which remains needlessly and preposterously high. One of the decisions the Premier League clubs are closer to is on the new cost control rules, but they look set to allow wages to be 85% of turnover. That is a remarkable figure that really requires consideration. Think of how even small proportions of that money could go to community work or indeed tickets to encourage a younger generation of fans. It says much that, in the time since the EFL asked for £285m from the Premier League, the elite division’s total wage bill has gone up by close to £500m. And for what? It’s not like they’re competing against European leagues right now. It is precisely why the wage race needs controlled. That was a factor which led to the Super League in the first place, which then led to the fan-led review. It’s exactly what the regulator is required for. Euros fever starts, raising further questions... Amid all the more controversial headlines around football these days, it is heartening that there can still be a bit of childlike excitement at the top of the game. That was nevertheless exactly the response of some international stars when they were shown the new Euro 2024 kits for the first time. It was that wonder at the colours that brings a Proustian rush, and the first sense of excitement around the competition. Along the same lines, the Romanian federation have released footage of a nice [documentary](~/AAAHagA~/RgRn1r2sP0RCaHR0cHM6Ly93d3cueW91dHViZS5jb20vd2F0Y2g_dj03bFdieGYwSFg1TSZ0PTIycyZsaWQ9NGxvbnVqYWRlbGE0VwVzcGNldUIKZe-sOPRlTmPk4lIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAMj) for their first tournament qualification in eight years. Such emotions only sharpen questions as to why Ben White is giving a chance at all this up, by not making himself available for selection for England. There’s no real mystery to it. It’s known he isn’t a huge football fan and this is very much a profession to him. Gareth Southgate, fortunately for England, has a lot of other options. Chelsea Although some of the headlines from this week have raised questions over whether the Europa League final could be moved from Dublin depending on the clubs that qualify, that is viewed as a non-starter. There are genuine logistical concerns over the small size of the city against the possibility of hundreds of thousands of Liverpool fans arriving if Jurgen Klopp’s side qualify - for what might well be his last game - but they aren’t seen as sufficient to change hosts. There is no real precedent for that, at least in terms of logistics. The last three Champions League finals were only moved because of truly exceptional circumstances such as Covid and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It has been broached that Uefa could potentially offer Dublin an alternative year, but it would really require the host federation to request that, and that simply doesn’t look likely. Liverpool - or any remaining big club - playing such a final is hugely lucrative. Dublin also missed out on their only other previous hosting, back for the same fixture in 2011, when it was Portuguese derby between Porto and Braga. It didn’t exactly attract international crowds. This might well be the complete opposite. Uefa have already confirmed they plan to reserve Croke Park as a mega fan zone, which has raised questions over why that 80,000-plus stadium isn't used over Lansdowne Road (as it will always be called to this newsletter), which has just over 50,000. The issue is that Croke Park has a permanent standing section in the historic Hill 16 end, which would need significant work to meet Uefa regulations.   Top football features ~/AAAHagA~/RgRn1r2sP0R1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvc3BvcnQvZm9vdGJhbGwvbWFuY2hlc3Rlci11bml0ZWQtbGl2ZXJwb29sLXRlbi1oYWcta2xvcHAtYjI1MTI2ODYuaHRtbD9saWQ9bTFxdHlwdjNmeGtlVwVzcGNldUIKZe-sOPRlTmPk4lIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAMj [Why Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool reign hints at bleak future for Erik ten Hag at Man Utd](~/AAAHagA~/RgRn1r2sP0R1aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvc3BvcnQvZm9vdGJhbGwvbWFuY2hlc3Rlci11bml0ZWQtbGl2ZXJwb29sLXRlbi1oYWcta2xvcHAtYjI1MTI2ODYuaHRtbD9saWQ9cmVpYW15aXUwbGYzVwVzcGNldUIKZe-sOPRlTmPk4lIbdHJpc3RyYW1iYWxkd2luOTBAZ21haWwuY29tWAQAAAMj) ~/AAAHagA~/RgRn1r2sP0R3aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvc3BvcnQvZm9vdGJhbGwvYXJzZW5hbC1taWtlbC1hcnRldGEtY2hhbXBpb25zLWxlYWd1ZS1wb3J0by1iMjUxMTgyMS5odG1sP2xpZD00YW54YWtycjdwbmZXBXNwY2V1Qgpl76w49GVOY-TiUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAyM~ [It isn’t about the celebrations – Arsenal’s Champions League progress shows a crucial step is behind them](~/AAAHagA~/RgRn1r2sP0R3aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvc3BvcnQvZm9vdGJhbGwvYXJzZW5hbC1taWtlbC1hcnRldGEtY2hhbXBpb25zLWxlYWd1ZS1wb3J0by1iMjUxMTgyMS5odG1sP2xpZD1xdDg4Nm1jMjBkeTdXBXNwY2V1Qgpl76w49GVOY-TiUht0cmlzdHJhbWJhbGR3aW45MEBnbWFpbC5jb21YBAAAAyM~)   Miguel's Dispatches Uefa officials have been on tour this week to try and properly communicate the structure of next season’s club competitions, amid concerns that there still isn’t a widespread comprehension of the “Swiss system”. Media were invited to a hotel in London before the Arsenal-Porto game, with former players following after. The structure isn’t actually as complicated as has been made out, and potentially offers some interesting innovations that just make stale opening stage that bit more enticing. It is a good solution for what it is, although that’s even if it can be called “a solution” at all. There are times when it looks like an evasion of the real issues. The reason the group stage had been rendered boring was not the format, after all, but financial disparity. That led to processions and dead rubbers, where there weren’t enough games of consequence. Uefa’s response has consequently been to get rid of the group stages and stagger matches. There was actually an acceptance of this argument among officials, but they would point that this is all a consequence of far bigger forces going back to the 1990s. Others would point to the ever-lasting power of the big clubs.   QUOTE OF THE WEEK     “I have no idea where we’ll be in the middle of July, other than I hope it’s Trafalgar Square and let’s get the party on.” Gareth Southgate on his future, as he confirms he has shelved contract extension talks   Reading the game quiz Since 1992, there have been six all-English quarter-finals in the Champions League.
