Or, as it is now known in the Premier League, Profit and Sustainability rules. Clubs like Newcastle United have been making their frustration clear and letting it be known others share the same sentiments. The argument from that side - that really only tells part of the story - is that it is to preserve the status of the big clubs. There is an irony there, especially in how Newcastle and Arsenal have found themselves on opposites of numerous Premier League issues of late, that it is the London club currently among the most affected. A further layer to that is how it may inadvertently serve Manchester City, given they are the club most associated with the issue through their cases. Arsenal want to buy a striker but can’t get to the level they want due to P&S restraints. It could mean they can't go full gun for the title. In many ways, though, this is the system working as it should. The solution to football problems shouldn’t always be to just spend money, especially given the inflationary effect this has on the entire game. Clubs should be encouraged to seek purely football solutions, although there is admittedly a lot that needs to be done for this to be fair. It’s often worth considering the other side of the argument, too. Imagine what football would look like if there were no such constraints? Sovereign wealth funds, for one, would be able to spend what they like and the game would be even less competitive. Even within the current system, though, Manchester City are on the most dominant run English football has ever seen. Newcastle United meanwhile broke into the Champions League. This isn’t to say there aren't flaws in that system, and redistribution of resources certainly needs to be looked at. Football probably needs more controls, though, not fewer. Many might point out that it has not exactly had a multiplying effect so far. There are some other grumbles from within, mind. As Chelsea seek to accumulate the next generation of talent, there has been a growing feeling they are possibly bringing in players that don’t have as high a ceiling as some of their academy graduates, which may lead to the latter being unnecessarily sold. Bashir Humphries is highly rated, for one, and was used a lot in pre-season. Another player most of Europe has been talking about, meanwhile, is Josh-Kofi Acheampong. The young defender has just signed his first professional contract amid huge interest. It is almost the success of the first team above him rather than Acheampong’s own progress, though, that could determine his future. Since academy-produced players are pure profit by the rules, the young defender could be viewed as an asset worth selling if Chelsea are encountering any kind of difficulties. It is an indication of how the approach to the rules has maybe altered perspectives, as well as prospective unintended consequences of the rules. It is usually when teams aren't doing well that young players have a better chance of getting an opportunity. With Chelsea, though, the financial pressures might create a greater onus to sell. If the team does well, and commercial and European income increases, however, there is less incentive to sell. That also fosters a situation where are fewer chances for graduates to get into the team. Of course, it could be pointed out Chelsea have far more simple challenges right now: they need to start winning games. The club are intent on standing by Mauricio Pochettino. They feel there is progress, even allowing for issues. He could do with withstanding some of the external pressure, though. An expected move suddenly has some unpredictability A new window, and of course new intrigue about Kylian Mbappe’s future. The quip from around Paris Saint-Germain is that it now seems to come around every six months rather than even every season. The feeling does seem to be that he will finally go this summer, but it is no longer so certain that it will be to Real Madrid. That is more from the Spanish club’s aggravation with the constant back-and-forth. The word from Madrid is they are now seriously considering a campaign for Erling Haaland. You can probably guess how the very idea has gone down with Manchester City, though. They consider it preposterous. Whatever happens, though, it may leave Mbappe looking to the Premier League. Saudi change may offer a charge to the window The transfer window had been quiet, which was why the timing of a significant statement by the Saudi football federation was conspicuous. They are set increase the number of foreign players their clubs’ squads can have, although for the start of the 2024-25 season. It could still bring a bit of a spike this January in terms of knock-on effect, especially given so many foreign player slots had previously been filled.
