The Independent's Morning Headlines email [The Independent]( June 21, 2023 [View online](   [Morning Headlines]( 1 /Frantic search for Titanic submarine crew who have until 10am on Thursday before air runs out](//link.e.independent.co.uk/click/31852639.35574/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuaW5kZXBlbmRlbnQuY28udWsvbGlmZS1zdHlsZS9yb3lhbC1mYW1pbHkvcHJpbmNlLWhhcnJ5LXRyaWFsLW1lZ2hhbi1tYXJrbGUtYjIzNTMyMjEuaHRtbA/583d2887487ccd777a8b7489B9edf9146 The families of five people missing in a submarine that vanished near the wreck of the [Titanic]( have been handed a grim deadline of 10am on Thursday for rescuers to find their lost loved ones alive in the depths of the [Atlantic Ocean](. A frantic search for the [OceanGate Expeditions]([submarine]( became an increasingly desperate race against time as it entered its second day on Tuesday, as officials said those on board would have already used more than half of their 96-hour oxygen supply. Despite US, Canadian and French authorities having expanded what is the deepest undersea rescue operation in history to cover some 10,000 square miles of ocean, an adviser to the submarine firm warned that the extraordinary mission had been hampered by red tape, bureaucracy, and a lack of urgency on the part of US officials. The identities of those thought to be on board the vessel – which lost contact just 105 minutes into its journey – [were revealed]( to include British billionaire explorer Hamish Harding, renowned French diver Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and [OceanGate founder Stockton Rush](, along with Surrey-based businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman Dawood. While some on board the five-person submersible have previously carried out dozens of dives to the wreck of the Titanic, which lies beyond the reach of light at 3,810 metres below sea level, in [an eerie message prior to departure]( Mr Harding wrote on Saturday that this would likely “be the first and only manned mission” to the wreck this year because of “the worst winter in [Newfoundland]( in 40 years”.   2 /[Inflation remains frozen on 8.7 per cent ahead of Bank decision on interest rates]( ONS says freeze caused by rising prices for plane tickets, recreational and cultural goods and services and second-hand cars 3 / [Jeremy Hunt calls mortgage crisis summit as experts urge banks to help those struggling]( Chancellor has summoned bosses from Britain’s leading banks to Downing Street to urge them to do more to support customers 4 /[Judge questions why Piers Morgan has not given evidence in hacking trial]( Mr Justice Fancourt questioned whether several ‘could and should have given some evidence’ 5 / [Andrew Tate charged with rape and human trafficking]( Tate brothers under house arrest pending criminal investigation THE BIG QUESTION Who voted to punish Boris Johnson – and who didn’t? Senior Tories were split over backing sanctions against Boris Johnson after the privileges committee found that he deliberately and repeatedly lied to MPs about Partygate. The former prime minister will be stripped of his parliamentary security pass after MPs backed the committee’s scathing report. Some 354 MPs backed the Partygate report – a majority of 347, after Labour pushed the motion to a vote. No vote was recorded for 225 Conservative MPs. Just seven Conservative loyalists voted in his favour, but it was approved by only 118 Tories – with the majority of Rishi Sunak’s MPs choosing to follow their leader and keep clear of the Commons. Here’s how senior Tories responded to the report and voted.
