[The Independent]( June 09, 2023 [View online]( [Morning Headlines]( 1 /[Trump indicted over Mar-a-Lago secret papers]( [Donald Trump]( has been indicted on charges of mishandling classified documents at his [Florida]( estate, a remarkable development that makes him the first former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges by the federal government that he once oversaw. The [Justice Department]( was expected to make public a seven-count indictment ahead of a historic court appearance next week in the midst of a 2024 presidential campaign punctuated by criminal prosecutions in multiple states. The indictment carries unmistakably grave legal consequences, including the possibility of prison if Trump's convicted. But it also has enormous political implications, potentially upending a Republican presidential primary that Trump had been dominating and testing anew the willingness of GOP voters and party leaders to stick with a now twice-indicted candidate who could face still more charges. And it sets the stage for a sensational trial centered on claims that a man once entrusted to safeguard the nation's most closely guarded secrets willfully, and illegally, hoarded sensitive national security information. 2 /[British toddler among six stabbed in French playground horror]( Girl on holiday with family among four children â all aged three or younger â and two adults injured in savage attack by knifeman 3 / [âExtremeâ heat warning escalated as UK set to roast in 30C scorcher]( Yellow alert upgraded to amber as risk to everyoneâs health rises 4 / [Rishi Sunak unveils new post-Brexit economic deal with the US but denies it is a failure]( But still no sign of the free trade deal with America 5 / [West Ham fans line streets to toast Europa Conference League champions]( The Hammers beat Fiorentina 2-1 in Wednesday nightâs final in Prague THE BIG QUESTION [Abuse on football terraces is rampant. Why hasnât it been stamped out?]( An ugly, anything goes verbal antagonism permeates much of British [football]( culture. From Arsenal [fans]([chanting about Emmanuel Adebayor](, their former player who went on to play for Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace, âAdebayor, three died in Angola, it should have been fourâ, through West Ham supporters doing [gas chamber hissing](when playing Tottenham Hotspur and their sizeable Jewish fanbase, to the sectarian [bigotry]( that festers whenever Celtic play Rangers, football provides opportunity and cover for the kind of behaviour regarded as intolerable in any other circumstance. In what may be the latest example, a man was charged with displaying threatening or abusive writing likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress after wearing a shirt allegedly referencing the Hillsborough disaster at Saturday's FA Cup final. Earlier this season, ahead of the game between the two clubs at Anfield, the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and his United counterpart [Erik ten Hag]([issued a joint statement](condemning what they called âtragedy chantingâ. The rivalry between the two sides is electric enough, they reckoned, without it being bespoiled by ugly songs.
