The Independent's Morning Headlines email [The Independent]( May 25, 2023 [View online](   [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [Energy bills to fall from July after cut to Ofgem’s price cap – but families will still struggle]( Ofgem has dropped its energy price cap by £450 amid warnings that consumers are likely to feel little benefit to their household finances. The price cap rocketed from £1,162 a year for a typical household in August 2021 to £3,280, having briefly reached £4,279, with the pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine both pushing up wholesale prices. Energy regulator Ofgem has dropped its price cap to £2,054 a year, but campaigners have warned that the lower cap is unlikely to provide much relief to struggling households due to the ending of Government support with energy bills. Energy security secretary Grant Shapps described as “positive” the drop in the energy price cap to £2,074 from July. In a statement, the Cabinet minister said: “It’s positive households across the country will see their energy bills fall by around £430 on average from July, marking a major milestone in our determined efforts to halve inflation. “We’ve spent billions to protect families when prices rose over the winter covering nearly half a typical household’s energy bill, and we’re now seeing costs fall even further with wholesale energy prices down by over two thirds since their peak as we’ve neutralised [Vladimir] Putin’s blackmail. “I’m relentlessly focused on reducing our reliance on foreign fossil fuels and powering-up Britain from Britain to deliver cheaper, cleaner and more secure energy.”   2 / [Tina Turner death: ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’ singer dies aged 83]( Singer died in her home in Switzerland after a long illness 3 / [DeSantis’s 2024 bid ridiculed as Musk’s Twitter event melts down]( Technical issues delay start of Florida governor’s launch event which quickly runs off-course 4 / [‘Police killed my son,’ mother of Cardiff crash victim says]( Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15, died in an electric bike crash in Ely on Monday, sparking a night of riots in Cardiff 5 /Battle for Boris’s WhatsApps: Tory anger as ex-PM ‘drags down party’]( Tory MPs ‘seething’ over new row involving Johnson, as ex-PM cuts ties with government-appointed lawyers THE BIG QUESTION [What is the radical technology helping those living with dementia?]( There is a scene in the 2020 film The Father, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, that is all too familiar for people caring for someone with dementia. In it, Hopkins’ character Anthony struggles to keep up with his daughter Anne’s (Colman) movements. One moment, she is bringing home dinner. The next, she is talking about moving to Paris with a boyfriend he doesn’t like. She’s in his flat. Suddenly, he’s in her flat. Her face shifts – she looks like someone he used to know, then a total stranger. Where is he? When is he? Dementia is a cruel sickness that radiates outwards, seeping into the lives of anyone in its orbit. Patients become lost in a maze of memories. The present day becomes too slippery to hold on to, so many retreat into themselves. Wayfinding – meaning the ability to find one’s way in the world – becomes severely impaired, resulting in anxiety, confusion, and distress that can be very difficult for families and carers to cope with.
