The Independent's Morning Headlines email [The Independent]( May 10, 2023 [View online](   [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [Donald Trump found liable for sexual abuse in E Jean Carroll trial]( A jury in New York has found Donald Trump liable for the sexual abuse of writer E Jean Carroll. Ms Carroll, 79, sued the former president for raping her in a dressing room at a Bergdorf Goodman in New York in 1996, and then “destroying” her reputation when he claimed she was lying. The jury didn’t find Mr Trump liable for raping Ms Carroll. In the courtroom, the clerk [read the verdict:]( “As to battery, did Ms Carroll prove that Mr Trump raped Ms Carroll?” The jury answered “No”. But the jury did find that Mr Trump more likely than not sexually abused Ms Carroll, and awarded her $2m (£1.6m). The jury also found Mr Trump liable for wanton disregard, for which Ms Carroll was awarded $20,000 (£16,000). Mr Trump was also found liable for defamation as the jury found that he made false statements about Ms Carroll.   2 / [Student doctors told: Skip university to plug NHS staff shortages]( Doctors’ union the British Medical Association warn an increase in apprenticeships could jeopardise quality of medical training 3 / [New Brexit red tape could see more empty supermarket shelves, food chiefs warn]( Exclusive: Fears of new disruption to fresh produce supply from EU when import controls hit in October 4 / [Britain’s top cop defends coronation arrests and says crowds cheered crackdown]( But senior Tory David Davis attacked the wrongful arrests, blaming the government’s controversial Public Order Act 5 / [Actor Stephen Tompkinson tells GBH trial it would be ‘career suicide’ to assault someone]( The 57-year-old DCI Banks star is accused of punching a man to the ground who was drunkenly making noise outside his home THE BIG QUESTION [Deposit-free mortgage: How does it work and how you can apply?]( UK lender is offering the first [deposit-free mortgage for first-time buyers]( since the financial crash of 2008 in order to help aspiring property owners escape “trapped rental cycles”. [Skipton Building Society]( has announced its new five-year, fixed-rate [Track Record Mortgage](, which will enable those who are seeking to buy a first home – but lack the capacity to save up for a deposit – to borrow the entirety of a property’s value. To apply, customers must be aged 21 or over and will be required to present proof of at least 12 months of on-time rental payments and a good credit history. But, crucially, they will not require a guarantor, differentiating the [mortgage]( from other zero-deposit deals on the market (there are 17 of these, according to MoneyFacts, which means they account for [just 0.3 per cent of offerings]( from lenders). Skipton’s mortgage does come with an interest rate of 5.49 per cent, however, which is above the 5 per cent typically affixed to five-year deals. Swiftly climbing rents over the past few years have made saving for a deposit difficult for many, with demand for rented properties [50 per cent above the five-year average]( at present, according to Zoopla.
