The Independent's Morning Headlines email [The Independent]( May 02, 2023 [View online](   [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [Revealed: Scandal of mentally ill children dumped on the wrong hospital wards]( Thousands of children in mental health crisis are being treated on inappropriate general wards – with some forced to stay for more than a year and staff not properly trained to care for them, shocking new data reveals. New figures uncovered by The Independent show at least 2,838 children needing mental health care were admitted to non-psychiatric hospitals last year as the NHS battled with a lack of specialist staff and a surge in patients. Children with eating disorders – who often need to be restrained to be fed through tubes – are among those being routinely put on general wards. It means staff without any specialist training, including security guards, are sometimes left to restrain these young patients. One trust chief nurse told The Independent that porters had to be trained to restrain children on paediatric wards, causing trauma for both patients and staff.   2 / [French police fire tear gas during violent May Day pension protests]( The former prime minister said publishing the cartoon was a worse mistake than helping to secure him an £800,000 loan 3 / [Met Gala 2023: Best dressed stars on the red carpet, from Kim Kardashian to Anne Hathaway]( The annual fashion fête will be in honour of the late Karl Lagerfeld 4 / [Right-wing think tank files lawsuit demanding Prince Harry’s immigration records]( The Heritage Foundation is demanding Harry’s confidential immigration records 5 / [Final evacuation flights for Britons leave Sudan as UN warns 800,000 may flee country]( Government ends evacuation flights from Wadi Saeedna airfield because of a lack of Britons coming forward and volatile situation on the ground THE BIG QUESTION [Why are teachers striking?]( [Teachers]( in England who are members of the [National Education Union]( (NEU) will take part in a latest walkout on Tuesday 2 May, which threaten disruption to more than 22,000 schools. The walkout is the fifth undertaken by educators this year as professionals demand improved pay and working conditions in response to the [cost of living]( crisis. Following a period of intensive talks with [unions](, the government had offered teachers a £1,000 one-off payment for the current school year and an average 4.3 per cent pay rise for staff next year but this was rejected and has since been withdrawn. Teachers are joining a host of other workers like junior doctors, civil servants and driving examiners on the picket lines in May after a long winter of discontent that has seen the country regularly brought to a halt by staff seeking fairer wages.
