The Independent's Morning Headlines email [View online]( October 20, 2022 [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [Braverman resigns and accuses PM of breaking pledges in another day of turmoil for Truss]( Liz Truss’s government was tonight rocking on its foundations, after a day of chaos which saw the shock dismissal of her home secretary followed within hours by the threatened resignation of her chief whip. Suella Braverman launched a savage broadside on the prime minister after being sacked from the Home Office for breaking security rules, effectively accusing her of breaking pledges to voters and failing to take responsibility for her mistakes. And there were allegations of bullying in the House of Commons as Ms Truss survived a Labour challenge to her decision to lift the ban on fracking, but provoked chief whip Wendy Morton and her deputy Craig Whittaker into a fury over a U-turn over their efforts to bring rebellious Tories into line.   2 / [Food bank demand surges 46% ahead of ‘worst winter yet as tsunami of need’ outstrips donations]( At least half a million children are in need of emergency food parcels, the Trussell Trust has warned 3 / [Krishnan Guru-Murthy apologises for calling Steve Baker ‘a c***’ during livestream]( Tory MP says he hopes Channel 4 sacks him after telling journalist he ‘appreciates’ apology 4 / [Staff at 14 train companies to stage new strikes next month]( Action on November 3 and 5 will coincide with strikes by RMT members 5 / [Meghan Markle says the Queen was the ‘most shining example’ of female leadership]( Duchess of Sussex feels ‘fortunate’ to have spent time with the late monarch     The Big Question What was it really like at PMQs yesterday? In the House of Commons press gallery, lobby journalists perched on green-covered benches in the rafters, elbows on narrow wooden desks like church pews. The vibe was either Victorian schoolroom or slightly neglected chapel – either way, the whole place could do with airing out, writes Harriet Williamson. In a sea of dark suits, I was definitely the only person in the chamber with lilac hair, dressed entirely in pastel pink. Completely out of place, but making up for it with enthusiasm, I was resisting the urge to nudge my colleague John Rentoul every two seconds and point out different MPs like we were playing an extremely underwhelming and nerdy version of celebrity spotting. Hey, I’m no hardened Westminster hack – it was a novel experience, not least the revelation that there’s an on-site hairdressing salon. Who knew? From the level of baying when [Liz Truss]( entered the chamber, one might be forgiven for thinking that within 40-ish days in office, she’d tanked the pound, crashed the economy and exploded half the country’s mortgage deals – oh wait...
