The Independent's Morning Headlines email [View online]( August 24, 2022 [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [‘No one’s safe anymore’: Parents’ fears after Olivia Pratt-Korbel, 9, shot dead in Liverpool]( In Liverpool, on the stretch of Kingsheath Avenue that was not behind a police cordon, children could be seen playing out in the street on Tuesday afternoon. Toddlers pushed toy prams along pavements. Primary school-aged youngsters rode bikes and scooters. Teenagers kicked a ball about on a scrap of land just around the corner. Yet, overnight, the killing of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel in the Knotty Ash area of the city’s Dovecot district has caused widespread revulsion, horror and fear. Olivia was killed after a masked gunman – who police said was firing “with complete disregard” while chasing a second man – burst into the house that she lived in with her mother. Parents living here say the fatal shooting of an innocent girl in her own home caused them to question their own children’s safety. Few gave their names to The Independent for fear of being targeted for reprisals by those responsible for the killing.   2 / [Meghan Markle identifies nanny for first time and credits her for saving Archie in nursery fire]( Archie’s bedroom caught fire during a royal tour to South Africa in 2019 3 / [Liz Truss reported to watchdog for ‘breaking ministerial code’ over grace-and-favour mansion]( Cabinet secretary asked to investigate reported use of Chevening for campaign meeting 4 / [‘My record speaks volumes’, says Priti Patel in plea to keep home secretary job]( Minister says up to next PM whether she stays on – as campaigners call for Rwanda policy to be dropped 5 / [Owami Davies’ family ‘forever grateful’ as missing nurse found after seven week search]( Police said they’ll try to establish what concerns she had that led to her going missing     The Big Question Why aren’t all fruits suitable for vegans? Supermarket giant Tesco is facing criticism over its use of wax to preserve some of its fruits on sale, rendering them unsuitable for vegans. Wax is often applied to citrus fruits after harvesting to keep them fresh for longer, some of which contains shellac, a resin derived from the female lac bugs that thrive in India and Thailand. The affair has cast new light on the difficulty of living by vegan principles when even fresh fruit cannot automatically be given the greenlight.
