The Independent's Morning Headlines email [View online]( June 27, 2022 [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [G7 told not to ‘water down’ climate promises amid fears of shift back to fossil fuels]( G7 leaders have been urged not to water down commitments on climate change amid growing fears they are set to pursue “disastrous” fossil fuel projects to ease supply problems stemming from the Ukraine war. There are growing fears of a shift back to coal and gas investment, as the leaders of Germany, France, Italy, Japan, UK, US and Canada kicked off three days of talks on the economy, energy and security issues in Bavaria on Sunday. Germany and Italy have announced plans to revive old coal plants as gas supplies from Vladimir Putin’s Russia dwindle, while Boris Johnson has hinted at support for a new mine in Cumbria. German chancellor Olaf Scholz – desperately trying to stave off gas rationing – has also said he wants to “intensively” pursue fossil fuel projects in Senegal to provide a new source outside of Russia.   2 / [Kendrick Lamar references Roe v Wade overturning in astonishing final Glastonbury moment]( Headlining rapper is the latest celebrity to condemn the Supreme Court ruling 3 / [Man in ‘life threatening condition’ as house destroyed in huge Birmingham explosion]( One man is in a life-threatening condition after he was rescued from the destroyed house 4 / [Airport chaos as luggage 'abandoned' and passengers 'forced to sleep on floor']( Five people have been hospitalised with injuries according to reports 5 / [Four dead and hundreds injured as bullfight stand collapses in Colombia]( Local hospitals are reportedly unable to cope with the number of injured spectators     The Big Question Will Boris Johnson resign? Boris Johnson has vowed that he will “keep going” as prime minister despite the Conservative Party’s crushing double by-election defeat in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton last week. In West Yorkshire, Labour’s Simon Lightwood defeated Tory Nadeem Ahmed to replace the disgraced Imran Ahmad Khan while, in Devon, Liberal Democrat Richard Foorde overturned a Tory majority of 24,000 to beat Helen Hurford to the seat previously held by Neil Parish, who was forced to step down after being caught streaming pornography on his phone in the House of Commons. To make matters worse, party chairman Oliver Dowden subsequently announced his resignation, declaring: “Someone must take responsibility.” This latest setback for Mr Johnson follows weeks of negative headlines for his government and his own narrow survival after being subjected to a vote of confidence by his fellow Conservative MPs.
