The Independent's Morning Headlines email [View online]( April 05, 2022 [Morning Headlines]( 1 / [Biden calls for ‘brutal’ Putin to face war crimes trial and warns Russia faces more sanctions over Bucha massacre]( Joe Biden has called for Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, to stand trial before international authorities as a war criminal. “We have to gather all the details” in order to “actually have war crimes trial,” Mr Biden said on Monday. The move is not unexpected, and comes after Mr Biden publicly rebuked Mr Putin as a “war criminal” amid images and videos of horrific carnage in previously Russian-held areas of Ukraine. Mr Biden reiterated his belief on Monday, adding to reporters while referring to the “brutal” Mr Putin: “He is a war criminal.” And he added that his administration would continue adding pressure to the situation via sanctions targeting Moscow. Western-led sanctions have been blamed for a hard economic shock in Russia that has led many businesses to close and the Ruble to lose value.   2 / [‘It’s now or never’: IPCC warns emissions must decline by 2025 to avoid dangerous climate change]( ‘We have the tools and knowhow required to limit warming,’ says IPCC chair Hoesung Lee 3 / [Ministers accused of ‘cultural vandalism’ as government announces plans to privatise Channel 4]( Broadcaster warns of ‘significant public interest concerns’ after ministers decide to press ahead with sell-off 4 / [Government’s former ethics chief supplied karaoke machine for Downing Street party]( The leaving do for a Downing Street aide took place on Whitehall during lockdown 5 / [Stonewall and 80 LGBTQ groups pull out of government conference over trans conversion U-turn]( Stonewall said the LGBTQ community’s trust in the government is ‘shattered’     The Big Question How will the UK respond to Russia’s latest ‘barbaric' actions? No 10 has said that Russia’s “barbaric” actions and the killing of civilians in the town of Bucha in Ukraine leaves the government in “no doubt” further sanctions are needed against the Kremlin. In an update on Monday, Boris Johnson also said the discovery of mass graves was “sickening” and vowed: “The UK will not stand by whilst this indiscriminate and unforgivable slaughter takes place.” So what more can Britain do to punish Russia for its wartime atrocities?
