Kherson is the first major city to be taken by Russia since the beginning of the invasion. Its mayor, Igor Kolykhaev, said that Russian troops had forced their way into the city council building and imposed a curfew on residents. As a result of the fighting, one million people have fled Ukraine so far, the UN refugee agency said. The UK's ministry of defence have also said that the Russian advance on the capital Kyiv has been delayed by "staunch Ukrainian resistance, mechanical breakdown and congestion".
