One of the most famous movie lines of the last 30 years (see Field of Dreams). It’s funny, though, just how much this phrase also applies to building your business and brand online. Today, I spent some time chatting with a CEO of a manufacturing company in the Midwest. Upon hearing his vision, it was clear he had some aggressive expansion goals for the future—more facilities, more dealers, more salespeople, etc. But in the midst of this, he has yet to invest in digital marketing. In his case, the reason why this is such a missed opportunity is because he’s essentially putting the cart before the horse. In other words, he’s building a traditional business, slugging away with regional sales reps, thinking that more buildings and people are what’s essential for their growth.
