Reality #3: Incredible opportunities will come from the difficulty in the months ahead. A Look Back at 2008 If we look back at 2008, unlike today, we weren’t given much warning regarding the economic meltdown. It literally seemed to all happen almost overnight, shocking just about everyone — most experts included. This time it’s different. We’ve all been seeing the signs for a while, which of course leads to many questions around the boardroom. One of these questions — and it’s a tale as old as time — is often, [“Should we cut our marketing spend?”](113/bXSp04/MWmMT7MZdWSW5p6js08kNFZBW8DFYQL4Ls5yCN7lCf0t3q3phV1-WJV7CgPNfW3FYQ3X4J_nmVW5WNDqF9c3Ng1W6Wps3r5BNJBqW52DY991cLsCWW7Lm6cZ22vDm3W236b0z6XCN8KW6czVvq3gxgG2N3vxtLZGXWF-W26XL4B4hKmPtW728Dgc8M-cCkN2YklHghYj5HW86c8PK7sKltXW9l8Kx04L4ZrkW6y4ycv1fTTjKW6KN2tR6JR4sDW6dLL1k7SH8X5W970KrW2pGG9jW2b4Kkx6Gm7ZlVCRNXR5h7-D8W5tW08v6Tg-McW8wHMdK7SGb6wW784HQN4KTVzrW5b5c_N1DW52GN2ktvkdmLTp7W5czJ6d1tW6G1W5jT-cC7RhKYZN4xhgG7HkStdV4_ZPd7dn2Jv34sN1) To this, I can only grab my forehead in anguish. And the stories just keep pouring in. It’s amazing to see. I mention this simple story to reiterate these two points: - Had we cut marketing at the time, River Pools would not exist today. - Had we cut marketing at the time, TAYA never would have become this incredible movement. Are you picking up what I’m putting down? Folks, I can’t predict what’s ahead, but I do know this: Great marketing is ESSENTIAL to our business growth and survival. Instead of letting off the gas, now is the time to push harder. Get creative. Do things others in your space have never done. And in the process, you just might stumble upon something that will change your life forever. [They Ask, You Answer Tip of the Week] Look at the home page of your website right now. How many “you” and “your” pronouns do you have in your copy? (Seriously, count them.) Now count how many “we” and “our” pronouns are in your copy. Are you seeing the point of the exercise? Ideally, you should be 80% “you/your” and 20% “we/our” — yet most companies are the literal opposite. Ouch. (Need help with your website’s messaging? Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
