[Open in browser]( Institute for Mathematics & Computer Science Hour of Code, IMACS Style! Now in its 11th year, the [Hour of Code]( takes place annually during Computer Science Education Week, and encourages students to spend at least one hour coding. But what exactly is coding and why is it useful? IMACS has been teaching computer science since 1993, well before coding became a thing! We know that computer science is so much more than coding. The study of computer science requires engagement in computational thinking, in which logic, abstraction and creativity come together to help solve intellectually interesting problems. In studying computer science — as opposed to following coding instructions — students gain a wide variety of experiences…using information to solve problems, designing systems to maximize simplicity and usability, and learning to break complex problems into smaller pieces that are easier to solve. If these experiences sound like they would be applicable in a wide variety of fields…it’s because they are! In studying computer science, students learn to think abstractly and analytically, setting them up for success in any STEM field they choose. How will your child honor Hour of Code? If your child is enrolled in IMACS, they can simply come to class! After all, they’ve been getting more than an hour of abstract thinking each week for as long as they’ve been enrolled. If your child is not enrolled in IMACS, we have a few options that involve computational thinking: - Grades 1 - 5: Attend a one-hour [Math Enrichment]( Placement class. - Grades 4 - 8: Attend a one-hour [Computer Programming]( Trial class. - Grades 7 -12: Take the one-hour [IMACS Aptitude Test]( to determine readiness for the IMACS [University Computer Science]( Course. (Yes — we know that the math placement class and aptitude test aren’t technically programming! But being a good programmer has little to do with learning to code and a lot to do with learning to think! The entire IMACS program, both math and computers, is centered around this concept.) Set your child on a path to success by getting them started today! Have questions or need guidance? Call or email us today! Now, it seems as though formal logic is the gateway between everyday programming and the conceptual innovation in computer science.” Naomi Spargo, IMACS alumna and Computer Science graduate from Carnegie Mellon University [Read More About Naomi]( Why Not Make the Most of Your Child’s Education? Flesch reading score

Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
