Senate To Vote On Gun Control Measures
The Senate is expected to vote Monday on four gun-control measures, proposed in the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida. Republicans agreed to vote on the measures after a 15-hour filibuster from a Democratic senator. The four measures, which focus on preventing terrorist suspects from acquiring weapons, and enhancing background checks, are widely expected to fail.

Cavaliers Stun Warriors To Clinch NBA Title
LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Golden State Warriors 93-89 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals on Sunday, clinching the city’s first professional sports championship since 1964. The victory over the top-seeded defending champions made the Cavaliers the first team in history to rally from a 3-1 series deficit in the best-of-seven NBA Finals and win the title.
Trump Calls Racial Profiling âCommon Senseâ
In a TV appearance Sunday, the presumptive Republican nominee called for the U.S. to adopt racial profiling policies in the wake of the Orlando nightclub massacre. “Other countries do it: You look at Israel... they do it successfully,” he said. Trump also reiterated his belief that political correctness was a root cause of the shooting.
Huge Protests At US Military Base In Japan
Tens of thousands of protestors staged a demonstration against the U.S. military presence on the Japanese island of Okinawa Sunday. Anger on the island, which plays host to a bulk of the U.S. military presence in Japan, was sparked after an American contractor was arrested over the rape and murder of a local woman. In light of recent incidents, the military earlier imposed a 30-day curfew and temporary alcohol ban on its personnel.
âStar Trekâ Actor Dies In Freak Accident
Anton Yelchin, the 27-year-old actor best known for his role as Chekov in J.J. Abrams’ rebooted “Star Trek” movies was found dead in his Los Angeles-area home Sunday. He was apparently the victim of a freak accident involving his own car, which rolled down his steep driveway and fatally injured him.

Julian Assange on Sunday marked a milestone he is unlikely to be celebrating: the start of his fifth year living inside Ecuador’s London embassy. The WikiLeaks founder is wanted for questioning in connection to a rape charge in Sweden, but fears extradition to the U.S. over his leaking of classified military information. Several attempts to broker a deal to see him emerge have come to naught.
Refugee Numbers Hit Record Levels
At the end of 2015, the world had 65.3 million people who had been forcibly displaced from their homes, the highest-ever number on record, according to figures released by the U.N. Refugee Agency to mark World Refugee Day. Syria is the single largest source for new refugees, but older conflicts, like those in Afghanistan and Somalia, continue to be big contributors as well.
