Russia In Syria Talks As Ceasefire Crumbles
With the Syrian ceasefire fraying amid airstrikes in Aleppo, Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov is scheduled Tuesday to meet United Nations envoy Staffan de Mistura in Moscow. The talks come as the U.S. and its partners accuse Moscow of not doing enough to rein in its ally, Bashar Assad, who they accuse of violating the terms of the truce, unleashing aerial attacks that have killed scores of civilians.
European Commission Reveals Economic Outlook
On Tuesday, the European Commission will release its spring economic forecast for the 28-nation European Union and the 19-nation eurozone. The forecast, which comes just days after official data showed that economic recovery in the region was gathering steam, is expected to provide further insights into how the drop in oil prices and the slowdown in China are likely to impact growth.
Pfizer Leads Earnings Reports
U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer will report its first-quarter earnings before markets open Tuesday. The maker of Lipitor and Viagra is expected to report earnings of 55 cents a share in the three-month period ending March 31, a slight increase from the 51 cents a share it reported in the same quarter last year. Other companies reporting Tuesday include Halliburton Co., Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide Inc., New York Times Co. and CBS Corp.

European Banks' Profits Slump
UBS, Switzerland's biggest bank and the world's largest wealth manager, kicked off 2016 with a steep year-on-year drop in net profit after a tough quarter for investment banking. Meanwhile, Europe's biggest bank, HSBC, posted a 14 percent drop in its first-quarter profit, as the lender's investment banking unit saw trading income tumble in the grim global market environment early in the year, but the profit fall was smaller than expected.
China To Investigate Baidu Over Student's Death
China's internet regulator said Monday that it will investigate the country's leading search engine, Baidu Inc., over the death of a university student who used the site to look for treatment for his cancer. The student, who died last month, had accused Baidu online of promoting false medical information, after he discovered an experimental treatment offered in a Beijing hospital through Baidu.
Puerto Rico Reaches Tentative Restructuring Deal
Puerto Rico said Monday it reached a tentative debt restructuring deal with some of its major creditors. The announcement came just hours after the U.S. territory declared it would skip making a $422 million bond payment. The plan will require both legislation from the U.S. federal government and participation from all of the bank’s creditors in order to work, officials said.

A new report from Morgan Stanley suggests that companies with higher gender diversity metrics not only delivered slightly higher returns on equity — about 1 percent over a three-year horizon compared to their less gender-diverse counterparts — but had less volatility in those returns.
