Many also arrange “Egg count tests” for roundworms and saliva tests for tapeworms. Despite this we have been contacted each of the last three years by very distressed owners reporting that despite regular worming (usually with IVERMECTIN) they have very sick horses. There is usually colic, severe weight loss and sometimes death (which statistics from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate show happens in nearly all cases reported to them) despite the best veterinary care. WHY? THIS IS OFTEN BLAMED ON “RESISTANCE” TO THE WORMERS USED! However more than one in every four horse owners use an incorrect wormer and another 5% one with widespread resistance. The need for this is stressed on the report form issued with every Faecal Egg Count(FWEC) test carried out by Hyperdrug ENCYSTED SMALL REDWORMS ARE THE PROBLEM Small redworms (Cyathostomes) burrow into the gut wall to form a cyst so do not produce eggs and are not found in faecal egg counts. They can be detected with a blood test which needs in addition three egg counts from January to December to be useful. RISK FACTORS NOT monitoring and targeting redworms in the gut throughout the year increases the number of worms there and able to encyst. Treatment immediately before or during cold weather with any wormer except MOXIDECTIN (Equest/Pramox) or a five day FENBENDAZOLE (Panacur) course may actually INCREASE the risk of serious illness or death when the weather warms up again and the encysted redworms develop and emerge into the gut as adults. This usually occurs in the Spring but sometimes earlier. PREVENTION Avoid use of Ivermectin, Pyrantel and single dose Febendazole during colder weather. If a blood test is not suitable a targeted treatment for every horse over 6 months with a MOXIDECTIN wormer during the colder months is essential. A five day course of FENBENDAZOLE may also be used if tests have been carried out to prove there is no resistance present.
