[Hypegolf] February 08, 2024 Weekly Digest 🥸 TaylorMade Golf Is Suing Costco Over Its Kirkland Signature Irons TLDR: Golf equipment manufacturer TaylorMade has filed a lawsuit for patent infringement against big box retailer Costco, citing similarities between the Kirkland Signature Players Irons and TaylorMade’s own P790 irons. Why It Matters: Dealing with lawsuits is nothing new for Costco, but this one is getting a particular amount of attention thanks to how popular the "accused products" of said lawsuit have been. What's clear is that, judging by comments shared on Instagram, people overwhelmingly see this as a win for Costco. The P790 irons that TaylorMade have accused Costco of copying are roughly twice as expensive as the Kirkland Signature Players Irons. Surely that's not the best look. We spoke with the two about their journey to this point. Why It Matters: Rising golf brands have been in the news recently for signing big name talents to endorsement deals, and it was interesting to hear Ajanaku state that his brand made a play for Tiger Woods. While that proved to be too ambitious, it's fun to consider which current players on tour could make a good Eastside Golf ambassador. Tony Finau, for example, is currently wearing Nike clothing and Jordan Brand shoes. There's also an official launch date, which will be March 6.Why It Matters: During season one, the unexpected rift between the PGA Tour and upstart league LIV Golf provided plenty of drama. But all of that was just building up to 2024. This time, that narrative will continue to unfold thanks to a framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the Saudi Public Investment Fund that was first announced in June 2023. There's a little bit of something for everyone no matter your taste. Why It Matters: TUMI has been trying to reposition itself as a lifestyle brand recently, and what better way to do that than to tap into the growing movement around golf and fashion. The brand already knows how to make suitcases and travel items of any variety, so the transition has been seamless. And in a world where luxury fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Gucci release ultra expensive bags that are bound to end up as display pieces, TUMI's are actually meant to be used. Strategic Sports Group is made up of the Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and other teams' ownership, and will funnel the money into a new for-profit organization called PGA Tour Enterprises. Why It Matters: Ever since the announcement of the framework agreement between the PGA Tour and the PIF last June, it's been assumed that the two sides would come to an agreement at some point that gives the Saudi wealth fund a stake in the tour. However, the year-end deadline was passed, and the balance of power has shifted now that the PGA Tour has found support elsewhere. Sources still maintain that the PIF will be given a seat at the table to negotiate however.
