ð A$AP Rocky Wants to “Press the Reset Button” for PUMA and Formula 1 TLDR: Hypebeast spoke with Flacko at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where the rapper explained how he plans to “change the game” as the creative director for PUMA’s F1 partnership. Why It Matters: Flacko’s appointment was announced in October, several months after PUMA revealed that it had signed on as the official licensing partner and exclusive trackside retailer for Formula 1 in May. Formally, Rocky is responsible for developing “bespoke capsules” to influence the brand’s future seasonal design directions. His inaugural, extremely limited drop launched at the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix over the weekend, lifting the veil on what to expect in 2024, when he will conceptualize collections for several Grand Prix races beginning in Miami, and later, in 2025, when he plans to put out full-size collections of racewear, fanwear and pure fashion pieces. ð¼ The Purity of Wu-Tang Clan’s ‘36 Chambers,’ 30 Years Later TLDR: In this special Hypebeast retrospective, RZA takes us back to the album’s creation and shares never-before-published photos of the Clan. Why It Matters: The group told Shaolin tales of violence, drugs and incarceration over sinister, piano-ladened beats that were significantly more aggressive than the melodic West Coast sound that was prevalent in hip-hop during its peak. RZA remembers that time well, but being asked to describe the energy of 36 Chambers causes him to pause in thought. “Determination with intention. Intended determination, not blind determination,” he says, circling back to the question later on. When the recording of the album began in 1992, the Wu had a strong sense of intention and were determined to express their art, culture, skill set, sonic and even hip-hop perspective. “I would describe 36 Chambers as the capturing of untamed youth,” RZA says. ð§ "Seoul Design" Was Filled with New Talent, Experimental Materials, and Fresh Ideas TLDR: It was K-design’s turn to get front and centre of the Seoul cultural scene this season. Why It Matters: Hot on the heels of Frieze’s second round in the city in September, Seoul Design 23 took place inside the Zaha Hadid-designed Dongdaemun Design Plaza, coinciding with Seoul Design Week, as an annual celebration of small businesses, young designers and collaboration. As a platform, Seoul Design aimed to get wider audiences excited about K-design – a festive moment blending craft, industrial and furniture design and architecture. “Seoul city is dynamic,” says Yoo Ehwa, a curator who organised the spaces of Seoul Design 2023, which opened with the theme of ‘Valuable Life’ and focused on critical issues of the environment, governance and social impact. ðº Stella Artois and Martine Rose Channel the Spirit of UK Pub and Pool Hall Culture With New Collection TLDR: Stella Artois and menswear designer Martine Rose have joined forces for a collection inspired by the belgian-style lager brand’s rich heritage. Why It Matters: The capsule, which consists of clothing and accessories, is also informed by UK’s pub subcultures, specifically the culture within Cousins Pool Club. The iconic snooker hall and bar is frequented by Rose and was chosen as the backdrop for the collection’s editorial and video lookbook. Stella Artois’ rich heritage is also represented within the capsule, as seen through the vintage-style logos, use of labels and bottle caps, and lived-in aesthetic of the pieces. Rose has been tapped by Stella Artois, and together they fuse the worlds of beer and fashion for a collection featuring a T-Shirt, buttoned shirt, and cap.
