KAWS debuts in Canada & more [Hypeart] August 30, 2023 Weekly Digest 🚓 Two German Tourists Vandalize Florence Vasari Corridor TLDR: German students defaced Florence’s historic Vasari Corridor along the river Arno. Why It Matters: The incident occurred earlier today at 5:20am (local time), when the two unnamed suspects, who were a part of 11 students staying in one of the city’s Airbnb’s, vandalized the 460-year-old corridor by spray-painting “DKS 1860” — which refers to the German football team, TSV 1860 Munich. While it is unclear, and highly unlikely, that the students were actually affiliated to the third division club, Florence mayor Dario Nardella lambasted the incident, calling it a “shameful act of vandalism.” Over $10K USD in Repairs: "Built in 1565 by Italian Renaissance painter and architect Giorgio Vasari, the Vasari Corridor was once a secret passageway connecting homes in the Boboli Gardens to what is presently the Uffizi Galleries, which at the time was a governmental building for the ruling Medici family. The suspects in question, aged 20 and 21, were tracked by surveillance footage from Italy’s Carabinieri military police. Authorities estimate that the damage to the corridor will amount to $10,800 USD in repairs. Why It Matters: Heading to Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), KAWS: FAMILY features artist Brian Donnelly’s renowned larger-than-life sculptures and paintings of his iconic characters. The exhibition, which is curated by Julian Cox, AGO’s Deputy Director and Chief Curator, features over 70 artworks from the artist’s past two decades. The curation involves a series of encounters, with families of related pieces installed across the second level of the museum. Larger than Life: Amongst these displayed will include the larger-than-life wood sculptures and augmented reality installations. Works in bronze, wood, on paper and canvas, plus toys and stainless steel will be exhibited. Adapting features from popular American cartoons, KAWS figures come in various poses, forms and sizes. At the center of the exhibition is the FAMILY (2021) piece, alongside a painted bronze sculpture featuring COMPANION, a figure with crossed out eyes inspired by early American rubber hose animations, a bulbous figure named CHUM and a fur-covered character named BFF, posed together in the style of a studio portrait. Why It Matters: The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism will encompass 160 works of art across a range of mediums. Spanning paintings, sculpture, and on-paper works, the pieces included in the forthcoming exhibit work together to explore the comprehensive ways in which Black artists depicted everyday life in the 1920s through the 1940s in the new Black cities that arose in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood as well as Chicago’s South Side and nationwide in the early decades of the Great Migration. Masterful Works Rooted in Black History: Opening on February 25 2024 at The Met, the exhibit is slated to feature works from Charles Alston, Aaron Douglas, Meta Warrick Fuller, William H. Johnson, Archibald Motley, Winold Reiss, Augusta Savage, James Van Der Zee, and Laura Wheeler Waring. The works of the aforementioned artists will be showcased against the contrasting portrayals of international African diasporan subjects by European artists including Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Germaine Casse, Jacob Epstein and Ronald Moody. Why It Matters: For Los Angeles-based artist Patrick Martinez, landscape paintings are more than just a way to depict a scene. They represent a form of preservation and a call for urgency. Part mural, sculpture and installation, Martinez has unconsciously redefined the traditional boundaries of landscape paintings through multi-media works that quite literally transport you to the physical place he has in mind. Championing Accessibility and Diversity: Just under 43 years of age, his work has featured in both solo and group exhibitions across the globe, including acquisitions by LACMA, Crocker Art Museum, Cornell Fine Art Museum and the Pizzuti Collection, amongst others. “It’s important for me to talk to someone that doesn’t want to come into a museum or that doesn’t care to,” Martinez notes as he sits painting his latest sculptural installation. “The neons are kind of that, they hang in windows to try and communicate to a passerby.” Read the full article [here](. --------------------------------------------------------------- 📷 Through the Lens: Daniel Malikyar TLDR: For our 'Through the Lens,' Hypeart caught up with Malikyar to learn more about his practice and how to surrender yourself to the moment. Why It Matters: Daniel Malikyar is an Afghan-American photographer and filmmaker who brings a humanist touch to each subject he documents. Whether an unassuming street scene in Cuba or South Sudan or portraiture of larger-than-life celebrities in Drake or Lil Yachty — there is an air of warmth and familiarity in the way he approaches photography. Chance Encounters: As the youngest member to join the Fujifilm X roster, Malikyar has traveled all around the world, surrendering himself to ‘chance encounters’, as he describes it, to find the story that lurks around every corner. In 2017, he co-founded the production company, MGX CREATIVE, and has since worked on a number of global branded campaigns, including projects with adidas, PUMA, Mercedes-Benz, Fujifilm and Sony, along with a recent book with TASCHEN on the history of hip hop jewelry.
