Why It Matters: Hauser & Wirth is showcasing a solo exhibition by the acclaimed American artist, Cindy Sherman. The eponymously titled show bypasses the scenic backdrops she usually employs, in favor of a new series of digital collages created through self portraits, that Sherman pieced together with various wigs, costumery, and make up. A Prolific Photographic Career: For over four decades, Sherman has used photography and self-portraiture as a means to interrogate the theme of identity. Coming to America: "The Filipino-American artist immigrated to America when he was four, after his parents were able to work enough jobs to send their kids to the US. Growing up in Southern California’s Inland Empire (IE), San Pablo recalls their being not much to do but watch movies and television, as well as hang out at friends houses — many of which were DJs, graffiti writers and B-Boys."
