The American Kennel Club is not an animal welfare organization. [Demand that they stop protecting puppy mills in the name of profit.]( [The Humane Society of the United States]() [A scared looking dog in a filthy cage]( {NAME}, Despite the image they try to portray, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is not an animal welfare organization. It is a purebred dog registry sustained by dog registration fees. Because of their financial dependence on commercial breeders, the AKC regularly lobbies against animal welfare bills, including those that would provide protections for dogs in puppy mills. It looks like the AKC is afraid such laws would cut into its profit. [Urge them to stop putting profits over the welfare of animals and take immediate action to support the Puppy Protection Act and the Better CARE for Animals Act as they are currently written.]( These critical pieces of federal legislation will put in place common sense measures to ensure that commercially bred dogs are given basic standards of care. Dogs are living, feeling beings, not inanimate objects for profit.
