She was doomed to a gruesome death from being bludgeoned and dismembered but was saved at the last minute when the Illinois slaughterhouse she was sent to was shut down. Sahara was one of the lucky ones who was rescued and got to live out the rest of her days in peace at the Humane Society of the United States’ Black Beauty Ranch. Even though slaughterhouses have all been shuttered in the U.S., almost 20,000 horses from the U.S. are still slaughtered every year because it is legal to transport these horses across our borders to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico.
