Here's how to declutter your kitchen counters, and keep them that way, plus a roundup of kitchen clutter items to consider getting rid of. [View this email in your browser]( [Home Storage Solutions 101: A Place For Everything That Matters]( Dear {NAME}, Right now, as part of the 52 Week Organized Home Challenge, and Declutter 365 missions, we're focused on the flat surfaces of your kitchen. As always, the first step in any organizing project is to declutter, since you don't want to organize clutter, but instead to get rid of it. And one of the tasks this week was to deal with one of the most commonly cluttered parts of your kitchen flat surfaces -- your kitchen counters, or islands. For this [Declutter 365 mission I want you to clear your kitchen counters off]( at least of items you don't use regularly (hint, if you don't use an item daily it probably doesn't belong on your counter), and either put things away the best you can or completely get rid of the stuff on your counters if it no longer belongs in your home at all. Once you do this mission you'll feel a great sense of satisfaction, looking at those much clearer flat surfaces. Once those surfaces are clear (or at least a lot clearer) it'll be so much easier to clean your counters, wipe up crumbs, and to use the space for things like kitchen and food prep, and much more! But as we all know, clearing off your counters can feel like a short lived victory, because stuff always get laid back down on them, doesn't it? That's why, in addition to the initial clear off, I want you to start the process of developing small but powerful additional habits and routines for your kitchen, which will help you maintain the progress you're making right now. This article about getting rid of counter clutter also discusses my concept of a daily reset for your counters, so you do clear the counters regularly, while also not feeling like you need to go nuts when someone (perhaps you) inevitably lays something on the kitchen counter for a while. The Declutter 365 program, and accompanying 52 Week Organized Home Challenge, is designed to help you (1) declutter your entire home, slowly, without overwhelm; (2) organize and store what's left in your home, so you can easily find what you need and use; and (3) learn the skills, habits and routines necessary to maintain your home, so it stays mostly clutter free, organized, clean and tidy, from now on. All together this program helps you create the home you've always wanted to live in. That means the first fundamental habit you've got to develop for yourself, to make the Declutter 365 program work for you, is to have a daily decluttering habit. This daily decluttering habit allows you to find time in a busy schedule to declutter, keeps you from being overwhelmed or making a huge mess, stops declutter burnout caused by huge exhausting messy projects in huge irregular bursts, and uses the power of consistency to compound your decluttering efforts to transform your home, and then keep it that way by avoiding clutter creeping back in. That means, every single day I want you to clear out something that doesn't serve you. [Every single day clear out something that doesn't serve you.]( Join The Declutter 365 Premium Group For Help With Developing That Daily Decluttering Habit Building new habits isn't always easy, but fortunately I've designed the Declutter 365 program to help you adopt this habit more easily, and also have coaching available for you, right now, with concrete steps you can take to develop and ingrain this habit into your daily life. In the [Declutter 365 Premium group]( I've got a video session available, as soon as you join, that you can watch all about developing a daily decluttering habit. In this session you'll learn: - Why decluttering in small consistent steps is better than in large irregular bursts - How to create a 15 minute per day decluttering habit do you don't have to rely on fickle motivation (including 4 concrete steps you can take to make this a habit for yourself) - How to use the Declutter 365 method for decluttering so you make continual progress, without making a huge mess in the middle. [Declutter 365 Premium session on developing a daily decluttering habit]( [Declutter 365 Premium]( Each Month In Declutter 365 Premium Learn About A New Habit Or Routine To Help You Maintain Your Home From Now On Once you're a member of Declutter 365 Premium, you'll get access to a new live session each month, where I teach you about a different habit or routine you can learn and implement, which will help you maintain your home so it stays mostly clutter free, organized, clean and tidy, from now on. This third step of the program, about learning to MAINTAIN your home from now, is really the secret sauce to making this entire program work for you, to create the home you've always wanted for yourself. If you do all the decluttering missions, and the organizing challenges, but don't learn and implement this third plank of the program, about the habits and routines you've got to do to maintain your space, all your efforts will be short-lived, because the clutter and disorganization will come back. You can know this is true, just from the Declutter 365 mission I asked you to follow today about decluttering your kitchen counters. You can't declutter them once and be done for the year with this task -- you know this, and I know this. That's why I gave tips for keeping the counters cleared off, from now on. But really, I want you to learn these skills for your own home, and with integrated systems, routines and habits that are doable and take a reasonable amount of time, so you can enjoy your clean, tidy, decluttered and organized home, and still have time for the rest of your life! So if you're interested in learning those skills, I encourage you to join the Declutter 365 Premium group, where we focus on just one of these habits or routines each month, to get us there!
