On the TV side, The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story leads with a total of four noms. [Nominees]( | [By the numbers]( * Black Panther breaks through: The Marvel movie [earned]( a best motion picture — drama nod, in addition to two other nominees. Two years ago, Deadpool became the first live-action superhero film to be nominated in either of the best motion picture categories, while Pixar's animated The Incredibles was nominated in the best motion picture — musical or comedy in 2004. * History made: FX's Pose becomes the first TV series with a [primarily trans cast]( to be nominated. Ryan Murphy's groundbreaking FX series — which features five transgender actresses as series regulars — also saw star Billy Porter receiving an acting nomination. * Female directors shut out: The nominations follow Natalie Portman's [criticism]( of the lack of female directors nominated during the 2018 awards show. [Explanation.]( The Real Amber Heard More than meets the eye: Amber Heard is a sharp, book-loving activist, but the actress is still best known for her stunning exterior (or that tumultuous marriage to Johnny Depp and whirlwind romance with Elon Musk). With the lead female role in Aquaman, that's about to change, Tatiana Siegel reports: + The badass Mera: Given the glacial pace of progress, the best thing Heard can do is pick roles that don't objectify women. She recalls Aquaman producer Zack Snyder's initial call describing his vision for the character "as a warrior queen, with a crown and a sword" she says. "A strong, independent, self-possessed superhero in her own right. I was like, 'That's the kind of character I can get behind.'" + Work offscreen: In the runup to the midterms, she was on the ground, canvassing for Beto O’Rourke in his bid to unseat Texas Senator Ted Cruz. In October, she visited the United Nations in Geneva, where she addressed diplomats about women's rights and the scourge of gender-based violence. “She’s passionate about the issues that she’s defending,” says Laurent Sauveur, head of external relations of the United Nations Human Rights Office. "Wardrobe for women is tighter and skimpier," Moneymaker explains. "When you get slammed into walls or hit by a car, it's harder to pad up. If a guy is wearing fatigues or something a little baggier, they have the opportunity to put more padding on." + Diversity issues: "I have seen [black] actors that have [white] stunt doubles come in and sit in the hair-and-makeup chair and they would be painted brown," says Candice Patton, who plays Iris West in The CW's The Flash. I’d had offers to direct but had never pursued them, and now I was a middle-aged lady with kids. I was no one’s visual image of a first-time director. And I thought, maybe I didn’t want it enough. Maybe I didn’t know enough technical stuff (I hear this from women over and over). Maybe I wouldn’t feel natural ordering people around (those of you who know me can laugh now). * Industry inspiration: Then I looked around. At the women who were leading directors. And the first two who popped to mind were Nancy Meyers and Nora Ephron. They didn’t direct “right away.” They had illustrious careers, made fabulous movies, raised families and then became directors. I imagine no one made any kind of face at them. I’ve met them both. I wouldn’t have advised it.
