SAG Awards special edition! Sunday's ceremony has just wrapped up, and it was quite the night — full of surprise winners, emotional speeches, colorful fashion and some good jokes courtesy of the show's first ever host. Plus: Snubs, the #MeToo movement, Morgan Freeman's big moment and more. — Ray Rahman
Awards Momentum Goes to...
THE WINNERS: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri kept its awards-season momentum going by winning 3 awards throughout the night — one for Frances McDormand, one for Sam Rockwell and one for the whole cast. On the TV side, Big Little Lies was a big winner once again, nabbing trophies for Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgard (more on that below), while Veep also boasted a strong showing, taking home awards for Julia Louis-Dreyfus as well as for the full cast. And This Is Us was the toast of the TV drama categories, winning best cast and snagging a solo award for Sterling K. Brown. [See the full winners list.](
+ The Snubs: The Handmaid's Tale, Lady Bird, Get Out and The Big Sick were among the titles shut out from the winners list completely. [See the full list of snubs.](
THE NARRATIVE: Scott Feinberg tweets: "DON'T GET TOO EXCITED: Only 11/22 previous best ensemble SAG Award winners went on to win the best picture Oscar ... The last time a film won the best picture Oscar without first garnering a best ensemble SAG Award nom was 22 years ago when BRAVEHEART did so. Will THE SHAPE OF WATER snap the streak that THE REVENANT and LA LA LAND could not?"
OSCARS FORECAST: Which wins are most likely to recur at the Oscars? Feinberg breaks down Sunday night's results and what hints they offer about the still-unfolding Oscar race. [Full analysis.](
Nicole Kidman's rousing speech: “I want to thank you all for all your trailblazing performances you’ve given over your career and how wonderful it is that our careers today can go beyond 40 years old,” she said upon receiving her award, naming the likes of Meryl Streep, Judi Dench and Jane Fonda as inspirations. “Twenty years ago, we were pretty washed up by this stage in our lives," she continued. "That’s not the case now. We have proven, and these actresses and so many more are proving, that we are potent and powerful and viable.”
Sterling K. Brown holds back tears: “I love actors so much, I decided to marry one,” the misty-eyed Brown said as he received his best actor award. “Ryan Michelle Bathe, you’re the best scene partner I’ve ever had.”
The Skarsgard Surprise! One unexpected moment came when Big Little Lies’ Alexander Skarsgard beat out Robert De Niro, among others, for best actor in a TV movie or limited series. Even Skarsgard himself thought it was weird, saying on the stage: “A lot of people have been asking who the greatest male actor ever is. Is it Mr. Robert De Niro or the tall dude from True Blood?” [Read more.](
The #MeToo Moment: Rosanna Arquette and Marisa Tomei offered a tribute to the women of the #MeToo movement. “We are inspired that so many powerful voices are no longer silenced by the fear of retaliation,” Arquette said. “"[We're] here supporting many women: Ashley Judd, Daryl Hannah, Mira Sorvino. So many… Anthony Rapp. Olivia Munn. All of you, thank you." [Read more.](
+ Women in the spotlight: Much of the show, in fact, was centered around female empowerment, from the all-women opening introduction to shout-outs in the male winners’ speeches. That included the speech from SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris: "We are in the midst of a massive cultural shift, with brave voices saying 'me, too' and advocates who know time is up," she said. "We are making a difference. You are making a difference." [Full recap.](
MORGAN FREEMAN'S MOMENT: As the woman charged with presenting Freeman with his lifetime achievement award, Rita Moreno infused her speech with genuine emotion and respect. But, of course, it was Morgan’s moment, and when he took the stage, he made sure to keep it interesting. “I wasn’t going to do this; I’m going to tell you what’s wrong with this statue,” Freeman, sporting a black ballcap, said. “It works from the back, but from the front, it’s gender specific. Maybe I started something.” But perhaps the oddest moment came when he decided to hold a mini back-and-forth with an audience member — [reportedly]( Lily Tomlin. “Hey, I’m talking to you,” he said to her, ignoring the rest of the people in the room (as well as the TV audience). “I’m talking to you… you just stand out to me, that’s all.”
THE HOST “I am Kristen Bell, and I am a narcissist,” the night’s host — the first ever for the SAG Awards — said at the top of the show. “I’m sorry, I mean, I am an actor!” She peppered in a some good content-related humor (“Elisabeth Moss is here, from the documentary The Handmaid’s Tale”) and some light political punches (including shots at Melania Trump’s war on cyberbullying) without naming names.
She also managed to get earnest: “Everyone’s story deserves to be told, especially now,” Bell said during her opening monologue. “We are living in a watershed moment, and as we march forward with active momentum and open ears, let’s make sure that we’re leading the charge with empathy and diligence. Because fear and anger never win the race.” [Full monologue transcript.](
THE RED CARPET As you might’ve guessed, this year’s red-carpet coverage was a lot less concerned about who people were wearing than in previous years — in fact, it took Sterling K. Brown asking Giuliana Rancic who she was wearing for the conversation to come up at all. Instead, much of E!’s pre-ceremony show consisted of Rancic asking actors and actresses questions about their careers, their work, their lives, their planned post-award celebration plans (if they were to win).
THE FASHION: “The red carpet pre-show was pretty much a snooze,” Booth Moore writes. “How many times do we have to hear about Gary Oldman's hours of makeup to play Churchill? The best moment was Millie Bobby Brown talking about wearing Converse with her Calvin Klein dress. ‘I’m always dancing,’ she mused.” [Full review.](
+ Color returns: Red, blue, pink, silver, mustard yellow, those [Converse sneakers]( — virtually every non-black hue was seen on the red carpet tonight, a big break from the Time’s Up-sensitive Golden Globe Awards.
+ The Time’s Up pins themselves were [a virtual no-show](. Still, there were exceptions, however, including Gina Rodriguez, Kumail Nanjiani and Allison Williams' [purse](.
+ Sparkles everywhere: “In sync with a major trend on the spring 2018 runways (seen at Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Simone Rocha and more),” writes Moore, “a heavy dose of sparkle showed up on the SAG Awards red carpet in the form of enough glitzy sequin gowns to dress up an episode of '80s-era Dynasty.” [Read more.](
Alison Brie on James Franco: When it was nominee Brie’s turn to be interviewed on the red carpet, Rancic used the opportunity to ask for her thoughts about the allegations made against brother-in-law James Franco.
Brie’s answer: “I think that, above all, what we’ve always said is that it remains vital that anyone who feels victimized should and, you know, does have the right to speak out and come forward. I obviously support my family and not everything that's been reported is fully accurate, so I think we're waiting to get all of the information. But of course I think now is a time for listening and that's what we're all trying to do." [Read more.](
+ Her outfit: In keeping with her ‘80s-set Netflix series G.L.O.W., Brie showed up in a [retro-inspired dress]( that suggested hints of Ziggy Stardust.
Sterling reveals his Oprah moment: What happened after This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown won his Golden Globe? “Oprah wished me congratulations over text!” he told Rancic, adding: “She’s very cool. She’s very sweet.”
Tony Hale’s date: The Veep star [brought]( his grade-school drama teacher to the ceremony.
And finally, we'll leave you with this Thelma & Louise red-carpet reunion:
