In the 1970s, Bulova released a diver with the name Snorkel, and someone at the company thought to have a little fun with the depth rating on the dial. Instead of having the usual 660ft of water resistance, or about 200 meters, they would round up to 666 feet, otherwise known as the number of The Beast. The nickname Devil Diver was soon to follow. Unlike the brand’s older GMTs, this is a “flyer” GMT, which means that you can quickly set the hour hand for local time separately from the rest of the timekeeping.   [Shop Bulova]( [Read More on Hodinkee](     WHY WE LOVE IT “With the combination of both a diver and a GMT, this watch is ready to raise hell wherever you take it.” [Bulova Oceanographer GMT](   Bulova isn’t the first, nor will it be the last, watchmaker to look at their back catalog and pull out a classic hit. The difference is that no other brand has the handsome and cheeky Devil Diver in their back catalog. As much fun as the watch world has with nicknames, that is not the only thing that makes this new time release stand out. Officially called the Oceanographer GMT, this watch has a 41mm 1970s style case and is only 43mm lug-to-lug, a rather compact measurement for a dive watch that makes this an easy-to-wear watch, even when you’re topside.   [Bulova Oceanographer GMT]( [Bulova Oceanographer GMT](   The double-domed sapphire crystal enlarges its height to 14.6mm, but with a slice of that being sapphire, it does not stand as tall as the measurement would suggest. The dial design, too, is something special. Each hour marker is a crystal cylinder that is held in place with a jewelry setting that is filled with lume. These tall markers require the hands to be shorter, as they cannot travel above them. Copying the design from the original Devil Diver, the hands are widened so they are still easy to read, and the minute track is brought inside the hour markers so that the hands reach the markers.   [Bulova Oceanographer GMT](   Easy readability is a common theme here, as when you turn out the lights, the large amount of lume glows from all the hour marks, hands, and 24-hour numerals on the bezel. The magnifier for the date is internal, leaving the outside sapphire with a smooth surface while still making the date easier to read. Additionally, this is a “flyer” GMT, which makes it much easier to update the Oceanographer GMT to a new time zone when you land at your new destination.
