We create artificial rules for what constitutes a dress watch, or a pilot's watch, or a dive watch, or — well — you get the point. How each timepiece speaks its shibboleth to get into the correct tribe is usually based on some archaic historical reasoning, rarely having an ISO standard that is continuously updated and in writing (as is the case with dive watches). So where do we put the watch that is too thick or busy to be a dress watch, doesn't have the timing ability of a dive watch, or doesn't trace its lineage back to the Battle of Britain?]( [The simple answer is that we call it a daily watch, or an everyday watch. It may house some extra calendar complications, give a decent amount of water resistance, or simply be a time-only stainless steel watch with no need to be more than that. These are the go-anywhere-do-anything watches that are, for many of us, our first luxury watch purchase that will form the backbone of our collections.]( [Below is a selection of pre-owned watches from the Hodinkee Shop that are ready to be your daily companion.]( [BY MARK HACKMAN]( [READ THE SHOP JOURNAL]( FEATURED ON THIS WEEK'S PRE-OWNED PICKS [Image of OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer]( [OMEGA Seamaster Aqua Terra 150M Co-Axial Master Chronometer]( The current generation Aqua Terra should be the yardstick you measure all other daily watch contenders by. Inside is the METAS-certified Co-Axial Caliber 8900. This movement has served as the backbone for Omega and has proven to be both reliable and easily serviceable. This watch stands up to near MRI machine levels of magnetism and has 150 meters of water resistance to boot. [Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar]( A daily watch for the punctual person. Complete calendars have long been part of the offerings from higher-end Swiss watchmakers. They are considered a little too busy by some to be a dress watch, but are usually on the more elegant side. Tracking the day, date, month, and moonphase creates layers of complications that do not crowd each other thanks to the 40mm sizing. Of course the Caliber 924 is an in-house piece of engineering— after all this is JLC — and its has made more movements than anyone else by a wide margin. [Image of Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar]( [Image of IWC Portuguese]( [IWC Portuguese]( The Portuguese has a long lineage going back to the 1930s, but its looks are as if someone asked a bush pilot to create a dress watch. The aesthetics are cleaned up, the crown slightly smaller, hands a little slimmer, but you still have a 42mm x 14mm watch. It won't do for a formal event, but it will certainly look elevated in a daily setting. The seven-day power reserve avoids any anxiety about putting this watch down on the weekend, giving you a chance to put on that G-Shock when out hiking, and being able to pick the Portuguese on Monday with it still ticking away. [Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days PAM 676]( The bucket the Luminor really fits into now is as an everyday watch, and that cushion shape with the large locking mechanism gives some nice attitude on the wrist. For many, the average Panerai size may be a turn-off, so the Due range was introduced. The case shape, sandwich dial with plenty of lume, and a respectable 42mm size, make this watch an obvious Panerai; but, at only 10.5mm tall, it will fit much easier on almost any wrist. [Image of Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days PAM 676]( [Image of Rolex Datejust 116234]( [Rolex Datejust 116234]( What selection of daily wear watches would be complete without one of the best-selling watches of all time: the Rolex Datejust. Available in an incredibly wide range of sizes, bezels, bracelets, dial colors, and metals, it is up to the individual to choose the exact combination they want for themselves. Fluted bezel on the Jubilee bracelet is the classic starting point, and a steel case will never go out of style. While champagne and silver have long been bestselling dial colors, the Rolex white is really the best backdrop for the white-gold hands and markers.
