A week that highlights unconventional interpretations of beauty. Dear Reader, I’ve been into beauty for as long as I can remember. So have you, even if you don’t realize it. Beauty is the toothpaste you use every morning, and the lip balm you carry around in your pocket. Beauty is what inspires you to wear red eyeshadow and purple lip gloss, or no makeup at all. Beauty is the relationship you have with your barber, and the comments section on Fragrantica. It’s deeply personal, and a conduit for connection. When I launched Highsnobiety Beauty a year ago, I wanted the section to reflect beauty’s many manifestations. It’s more than a moisturizer “for men” or a lipstick “for women” — it’s product, yes, but it’s also bigger than that. Beauty is culture: It’s TikTok's “[crying makeup]( trend, the [“Sephora kids” epidemic]( and [Gen Z’s willingness to experiment with their looks](. Beauty is also ugly. It confers power and status on some, and withholds it from others. It’s what makes us vulnerable to an industry built to play off our deepest insecurities. Over the past year, Highsnobiety has confronted beauty’s difficult dualities. And we have no plans to stop. From here on out, we will continue to celebrate the joy and [self-expression that perfume affords]( examine the increasing pressure on young women to [go under the knife and needle]( and [question wellness trends]( pushed by brands and influencers looking to sell product. For the one-year anniversary of Highsnobiety Beauty, we’re rolling out a week of content that highlights unconventional interpretations of beauty. Click in and celebrate with us. So, is it time we reclaim the t̶r̶a̶m̶p̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶m̶p̶? We photographed nine New Yorkers and their inked backs to understand how the tattoo is shedding its misogynist, hyper-sexual connotations.
