Amazing life developments can spring out of what seems like pure randomness. Sure, if we create goals for ourselves and reverse engineer the path to accomplishment, we can go on an exciting journey. It's a worthwhile exercise to have some goals and build the competence to realize them. But life isn't all about setting an aim and reaching it. Sometimes it's about listening to the subtle pull. And this pull can be completely disconnected from your existing plans. It might not have any rational basis. On a particular day, you might feel drawn to this coffee shop or you feel moved to call an old friend or you venture to a new part of your city "on a whim." What is a whim? "A sudden desire or change of mind, especially one that is unusual or unexplained." What I'm describing is developing the sensitivity to notice and act on these whims. Give yourself permission to listen even if you can't explain to why. Listening to these subtle signals can increase the landscape from which serendipity can operate. They might lead you to a place where you recognize your prior goals were only stepping stones. Now that you're standing on new ground you can see the horizon more clearly. So you march in a slightly different direction. We can have an approach toward life that is more like a conversation than a conquest. More like a shapeshifting riddle than a picture-perfect roadmap. So I ask you... Is there a ripe whim in you now that you need to heed? This is a nudge to listen. â True Friendship Digest these words from poet, David Whyte: âBut no matter the medicinal virtues of being a true friend or sustaining a long close relationship with another, the ultimate touchstone of friendship is not improvement, neither of the other nor of the self, the ultimate touchstone is witness, the privilege of having been seen by someone and the equal privilege of being granted the sight of the essence of another, to have walked with them and to have believed in them, and sometimes just to have accompanied them for however brief a span, on a journey impossible to accomplish alone.â ð¤ Learn This Word Psychobiotic: a term used in preliminary research to refer to live bacteria that, when ingested in appropriate amounts, might confer a mental health benefit by affecting microbiota of the host organism. Whether bacteria might play a role in the gut-brain axis is under research. â³ From The Archives A hand-picked classic HighExistence article. â[Zanshin: Learning the Art of Attention and Focus From a Legendary Samurai Archer](=)â In the 1920s, a German man named Eugen Herrigel moved to Japan and began training in Kyudo, the Japanese martial art of archery. Herrigel was taught by a legendary Kyudo master named Awa Kenzo. Kenzo was convinced that beginners should master the fundamentals of archery before attempting to shoot at a real target, and he took this method to the extreme. For the first four years, Herrigel was only allowed to shoot at a roll of straw just seven feet away. When he was finally allowed to shoot at targets on the far end of the practice hall, Herrigelâs performance was dismal. The arrows flew off course, and he became more discouraged with each wayward shot. Herrigel was convinced his problem was poor aim, but Kenzo replied that it was not whether you aimed, but how you approached your goal that determined the outcome. Frustrated with his teacher, Herrigel blurted out, âThen you ought to be able to hit it blindfolded.â Kenzo paused for a moment and then said, âCome to see me this evening.â â[Continue Reading](=)â ð¹ Lastest Video
